I realize that it would be virtually impossible to move in-tact, due in part to structural integrity issues and roadway clearances. The posts would be cut off at ground level, portion in ground would be replaced with "Perma-Columns"
I was planning on re-using all material with the exception of roof metal, thought I'd use it to line the iniside of the building after insulating.

WD-9, I would just number your roof sheet metel from front of building to the back end. do this for both sides of roof. Same with the sides. Then put it back on the same way it came off...Keith

Moving a building that size in So. Dak. would not be a problem. I know of many that are on second homes. It costly and time consuming but many are done every year. Local mover usually has a waiting list.

Take it down, Get yourself a Sawzall, use bi-metel to cut all nails. That size of building in my area would be double trusses, one on each side of the poles. They should have bolts going clear through both trusses with braces nail under each one. Get yourself 4-6 inch pieces of tubing that will side over the poles, weld an end plate on each one, making a pole cap. Then bolt or weld a handcrank boat winch to each tubing cap. These can be used to slide trusses down the poles. Hopefully they screwed the sheet metel on,best way to remove sheet metel is buy yourself a GOOD cordless drill with couple extra batteries. Having one in the charger at all times.The very best way to take a pole building down is in the EXACT opposite way it was put up...BEST OF LUCK..Keith

Keith, Have you ever tried sawing pole barn nails with a sawzall?I have and they are hardened nails.I never had any luck sawing the darned things.Burned up or broke a lot of blades though.

Cut lots of pallet nails which are extremely hard plus they are screw nails for hard wood pallets. You just have to buy real good saw blades, NOT CHEAP ones. You ever try to take pallets a part without cuting nails you just break the boards. I use Sawzall in remodeling, greatest tool for removing studs, top and bottom plates or any place there is a blind nail or screws. Trick is to buy different Bi-metel blades untill you get the right combination for your job..HTH..Keith

You know I thought the same thing until the other day. I cut through about 10' of some wood and about 50large nails in less than 5 minutes the other day with 1 blade. Yep I was impressed.

That would be a pole bulding, and you are going to disassemble it flat out, all of it, including the sliding doors, so mark where the pieces came from and record them like drawing a jigsaw puzzle on paper. I'd bet the poles also go down into the ground 3 or 4' too, with or without a concrete slab poured around them. Isn't like a house where you have where you have joists across the bottom for support or to keep it in shape, so you don't just pick it up and move it. You're gonna have to disassemble it, and are going to need a very long trailer for the poles alone. You certainly have your work cut out for you, but you wouldn't be the first to buy a barn or move one.

In essence, you got a deal on used material to build yourself a barn. You just gotta disassemble it, pack it up, move it, and build yourself a barn, no extra pieces.

Take a drive along the route you would use to move it. I think you'll quickly realize that will not be practical to move it. Don't forget that a building on dollies will sit several feet higher. Also, I don't think you can move a post frame building of any size intact without adding a lot of bracing. (Much of a post frame building's lateral strength comes from the posts. Also, all of a post frame building's weight rests on its posts.)

So your best bet is to dismantle it and salvage the materials. Certainly the trusses can be salvaged. Maybe the steel can be reused. The girts and purlins might be iffy; it's difficult to pull the pole barn nails without wrecking the boards. The posts might be salvaged if they're not set in concrete. Anyway, consider the value of what you'll get out of the building versus the cost of the same materials new.

If in one piece, contact a house mover. It also depends on the road, number of trees, electric, traffic,cost, and loads of other things that will pop up in moving it. Morton will dismantle and set up, hope you have big bucks to do this trick. 9 miles isnt that far but it could seem like 90 miles by the time you get there. You need lots of luck so good luck.

On a building thay wide, it woul;d be nearly impossible to move it intact.I would dismantle it.Hopefully the metal was screwed in place so that would be easy to remove if so.If the purlins were stood on end, then remove the nails that were used to splice them together.Then simply twist them back and forth.The pole barn nails will snap rather easily where they are nailed to the trusses.A very large Crescent wrench works nicely to snap off the purlins.If the trusses were nailed in place, the easiest way to remove them is to use a large punch and a hammer.Simply drive the nails on through the trusses.This will cause minimal damage to the trusses and the posts.Dig the posts out with a backhoe.Depending on their condition, you may want to replace them with new posts.

Those large pole sheds can be moved intact. Had one moved 7 years ago- 40x75. Mover hydraulically raised the building, no extra internal bracing. Did not cut posts which were 3-4 feet in the ground. Cost $4500, took two days. Same mover just moved a larger one for my BIL in the TC metro area.
