well Im going to buy a new ridding lawnmower, Tractor Type. I have it down to two companies Cub Cadet or John Deere. Seems like the Cub Cadet has more fetrues and costs less than the John Deere from Home Depot. One thing In particular is the Hydrostatic tranny on cub cadet I like. I dont understand why the Deere costs so much more when it has so much less, is it cause of the name? Im looking for a tractor with a 54 inch cut, I have a big property.

I just want to chime in with my experience. I'm a farmer who cuts my grass. When the guys at work talked about the "performance" of mowers, I thought they were nuts. Then I bought a brand name mower, which I thot was a good brand. It was a lemon. I knew I needed to spend more money. I ended up buying a John Deere. It came with a 2 year warrenty instead of 6 months. We did have some minor problems. I would call the dealer and they would pick up the mower and return it. One time there was a recall. My local dealer called me, made an appointment to pick up the mower and returned it. They have always arrived within a few minutes of the apppointment. As for cutting the grass, it is simply unbelievable the difference this mower makes. Even my teenage children commented on the difference. You might not believe this, but it will improve the looks of you whole lawn. As the others have said, the resale of a Deere can't be beat. You will always have something of value. I don't think that I have ever bought a product that I have been so pleased with, both the performance and the service. Forget about Home Depot and get a real Deere. You'll not regret it.

The main reason the green tractor is more expensive, it is a better tractor with a lot better service network. don't get me wrong, I like the old Cub Cadets, but I would not give a plug nickle for the new ones, the hydros, frames, deck, etc are not as heavy as the old ones.

I looked at a Cub Cadet Z Force 50, but i couldn't buy one around here. So I eventually bought a Gravely 48 in cut Zero turn. Real happy with it. Local dealer for service. I would buy either again. Easy.

You may have your mind made up between JD and CC, but you will spend a lot more money on either of them than a MTD with some other name on it. For half the price, I would check them out. They all do about the same things.

My old White (which was a low line MTD) lasted more than 25 years.....so I replaced it with a somewhat bigger Lawn Machine that I bought at the end of the season last year and paid less than $1000 with the large bagging attachment. It works great for my needs--I mow about 2 acres of lawn and rough. Good luck!

Lots of good advice in these posts. go to a John Deere, Walker, or Hustler or other COMMERCIAL lawn mower dealer and shop around, compare machines. I would consider a hydrostatic, zero turn unit. they are much more productive and time efficient. Good luck Ben

Lawn mowers at TSC and Lowes won"t last they aren"t made like old JD and CC mowers go to a dealer that has Cub Cadet Commerical mowers they cost more but will last if you don"t want a zero turing mower get a 3000 series CC ,same with JD don"t get a cheap one , you"ll be disappointed, JD commerical ZTR mowes don"t have a fabricated deck they are stampted like the cheap decks.

Your local Deere dealer will match the price and have service. The big box stores only carry a few of the dozen+ JD models. Look at the JD web site and dealer for the model that suits your needs. You maybe happier with a Garden Tractor rather than a Lawn Tractor. They look the same from outside but are all together different under the hood. 10 years from now the JD will be worth how much if it isn't dented up? Brand X if it's still running after 10 years is worth salvage price at best.

Sounds as if you need something bigger than Murray makes. But even if one of their models seemed perfect, stay away from Murray. Mine is one piece of junk, only two years old.

Rule # 1: DON'T BUY FROM THEM UNLESS THEY SERVICE WHAT THEY SELL!!!!!

I would NEVER buy from Home Depot, Menards, or any other big chain store like that. Go to your local small engine shop (could even be ACE or True Value hardware, they service what they sell here atleast) Go to a place that makes a living on small engines and the equipment that they run. There and only there will you have peace of mind. If something goes wrong, they can fix it instead of giving you the run-around.

It may cost more, but the warranty actually stands for something.

I bought an Encore Z-42 to mow my 1.25 acre lot. With my JD 111-L it took about an hour plus trimming time . I've had my Encore 9 years and only had to change the deck belt and one pulley in all that time. [plus oil changes and grease ] It takes me 1/2 hour and I can get so close to trees and other obstructions, I barely need to weed wack at all.If you can run a Bob-Cat or similar machine, It's a piece of cake...It cost more but it was worth it.....

Cub Cadet,Yardman and Lawn Chief are all built by the same company(MTD) If you are going to get a hydro buy as much as you can afford. The John Deere mowers sold at places like Home Depot are second class compared to the ones at a dealer. We have a Grass Hopper at work and really like it.

Between the two choices you gave, flip a coin. I think they are both good mowers and will do an excellent job. Personally, I went with a JD F935 commercial mower. Couldn't afford a new one and found one used in good shape. 10 years old and paid $3,600 for it. It has a 22 hp diesel with a 60 inch deck. Not quite a zero turn, but it will do a good job around trees. Has the outfront deck which is great for poking under bushes and stuff. Wish I could have afforded the 1145 with a 72 inch deck and four wheel drive, but the baby needs new shoes...

If you have some acreage to mow, spend the money and buy a commercial mower, and don't look back. If you have anything at all to mow around, any obstacles, irregular terrain, anything, buy a zero turn mower, a rider is a waste unless you have real open areas and don't have to go around anything.

I have a three wheel Scag I need to sell, 72 inch deck so its only good for golf courses, grass runways, and other real flat areas. Very maneuverable. It In very good shape, I just went thru it and replaced parts and made adjustments and cleaned it. 50 miles south of Atlanta.

I have heard that the John Deere mowers at Home Depot only last 2 yaers and the rear end goes out on them. So it you want a John Deere go to a dealer and get a better model.

everybody that knows me knows i bleed farmall red. however, i have mowed with a cub and have neighbors that use nothing but cubs to mow with. i have a (hate to say it) a john deere. mow about 3 acres. bought a 14 hp/46" cut in '90 - ran it until last year and sold it For better than 1/2 what i paid for it and bought a 25hp/60" cut JD. the first mower would have had around 1500 hrs. Mowed local cemetery 2 years with it also. put 1 set brakes, 1 blade clutch, 1 main drive belt. it (and the new 1)would mow circles around the cubs. have a very good cub cadet dealer - told him i hated to buy elsewhere but i was buying a jd. his answer -- i don't blame you/they are better. the low ends at hdepot/lowes i do not know about. the upper ends can not be beat. cost more up front - but all the major lawn services around here use the jd's because of the reliability.

Also check the price of maintenance items like filters and belts. Nothing wrong with getting a good used one that someone has taken care of.

i have been using the white lawn tractor made by mtd ans also a toro wheel horse, for mowing now for several years,other than belts and balades and general service work they have mowed and pickup a lot of grass for me. service of equipment is the key to using them.

Well if it was me and had the money to buy, I'd go with a 1950 or so farmall cub not one of the new things that might last 2 or 3 years.

Local John Deere dealer says that the truck loaded with crates of John Deere riders stops at their place and then hits the local Home Depot. Dealer says they are the same mowers.

The HD mowers are the same as the dealers. The dealers threw a fit when HD got a contract to sell them, so JD worked out a deal where the closest dealer would "inspect" each mower before it could be displayed for sale and receive an $80 fee for their trouble.

JD L model at home depot is the same as dealer, the cheap model.i bought one and changed my mind after going to dealer and comparing them side by by side.i bought the LT 160,a lot better mower. steering is a lot heavier,turns shorter,frame is heavier and all welded,battery ia easier to get to,seat mount and adjustment is much better and a lot easier to fill with gas.hydro pedals are better.mower deck is heavier.it is supposed to last twice as long.

this just more.the one cyl. kohler is better than the 2cyl.briggs, it also has more torque.JD has the best deal for keeping the mower running when backing up.compare brands and see which one you like and fits you better.thats what i did and JD LT was much better.the deeler greased it, serviced it,adjusted the mower,filled the gas tank and delivered it.my first riding mower, after one minute on it i loved it and knew i made the right choice.i looked at others.

they are hydro,automatic is what they call them. you set the engine speed at full and control it with the foot control.the more you push ,the faster the tractor speed.the engine and mower speed stay the same.they will barely move to 5mph.cub cadet is not as good as they used to be.there foot control isn't as easy to use.if you can afford it,LT is a much better mower and cheaper in long run.the lift& height is so much better&easier to use.

I wouldnt buy any lawn mower from anyone but a dealer -- NO CHAIN STORES

if your just mowing get one of the zero turns.. you will be happy I am told by all the relatives that have ever got one.

and JD makes some really good stuff.. but sometimes it does go bad...

I had driven nothing but deere up till last summer... we had a Sears (MTD)gt5000 thrust apon us...

I LOVE MY DEERE BETTER THAN EVER! its a 1982 400
