I have 2 walk doors to my shop that I would like to hook up to a siren and flood light when opened. I dont need anything real complicated, just so it makes alot of noise and turns the light on if I would get unwanted "visitors". Any web sites out there with ideas, how to instructions? Thanks.

I have a similar setup monitored by Protection One. Motion detectors don't work well if you are in a cold area. I have an infared beam inside (as well as door switches) and if anybody gets in the path of the beam or forces the door open the sheriff will show up. If you are really concerned you should pay to have it monitored. If a thief ever figures out you are not it won't take him long to silence your horn and steal.

This is probably more sophisticated than you want, but would be easy to set up if one camera could see both doors. The camera senses motion and starts recording on the computer hard drive. Runs on cheap computers and cameras have become cheap, too. Wish I'd had it running before I got ripped off in Feb...
This isn't the only software out there for this purpose. One, I recall, can use 4 cameras.

Mr Butcher,I got a security systems co. to installed the whole nine yards to my house and shop.24 hr.monitoring . Only $19.95 a month. I even got an outside siren. I'm away at my workplace during the week and every once in awhile I just leave for a day or two. Can't get much better than that. I have even thought about putting in some cameras. Oh by the way I do live in a good area ,but you never know.

Worked with a guy in the 60`s that put a micro switch over two doorways going into his shop. When ever anyone came in and he was napping it would trip a 12 volt buzzer in his office to wake him up. Of course it had an on/off switch. Worked great but could be a siren or horn for that matter.

Butcher, Go to your nearest Radio Shack and look into their alarm system. The basic unit can be customized with all sorts of accessories such as
magnetic door and window switches, sirens, flashing lights, smoke alarms, motion sensors, phone dialers. I even hooked up thermostats to monitor the greenhouses for low temperature conditiions and dial me 20 miles away.

Recently had a little trouble with a wayward "family member". We travel often enough, and the town is small enough, that everyone knows when we have left our home. So Radio Shack had my solution... after some research with the local security companies who wanted nearly $1300 and I did it for +/- $300. I had to go to a couple stores to get all my parts, but this gave me a chance to find a store that knew and understood the system.

The systems are not complicated, and come with instructions. Just magnetic switches and a power supply. I can tell you from experience that neither the siren nor light will work unless you are monitoring the place night and day. The police will be more interested in citing you as a pest than catching the burglar. Anyone caught will simply say it is an accident.
I always recommend video tapes. Very easy to set up, and is an absolute guilty plea in court, or simply to show to defensive parents that think "Our little Johny" is an angel.
