OK guys here is a simple one. Every parts place looked at me as if I had LOBSTERS craling out of my ears. All I need is the number for a spin on Fram, Stp, Etc. oil filter for my "L" Gravely. We have had it since new ~1964. Have done a total clean- sand blast- and paint job. Looks just great and added the accessory oil pressure gauge. Bought it used for $15.oo. New is ONLY$55.OO!!!!! It is fun when you get a machine done and it looks almost new. Jeffcat

FOUND IT. Today,Sunday, I went in to town for a radiator hose at Pep Boys. They didn't have the top hose so I went over to Advanced Auto parts. The older guy behind the counter knew what I was talking about and knew where there was an older book. BINGO We found the whole section on Gravely;about 2" of collum; still listed as Studabaker , and found there are 2 kinds of spin on. The full size is a Fram PH8A----BUT the better deal is a PH16. Same diameter but about one inch shorter. MUCH easier to get on and off. Bought the PH16. There you go folks -now we all know what filter your Gravely needs! Jeffcat. PS Dannie where were you two weeks ago? I would have come over for that pile of stuff! I live in South Jersey. My dad told me to get this kr--p out of here or it goes to the dump. These are a BEAST of a machine. THey SOUND like they mean business! Just about all painted and it is Berry Red in color. Under the hood and gas tank support was a perfect color match. Everything else is BLACK. Now a couple of decals and UFFFFDA! Jeffcat

Those old Model Ls are a bear to handle. Watch out for the end of the starter cord; it likes to come off and smack you good in the face. By the way, does anyone know how to keep the big nut tight on the drive arm of the sickle bar mower?
The original arm was loose so I ordered a new one.
I tightened the nut as much as possible and in less than two minutes it loosened. It immediately started wearing the shaft. At $70 each, I'll not try it again if there's any chance it will get loose.

I had a Gravely model "L" and I'm pretty sure it used a Fram PH-8 spin on filter. I gave it to my son and he restored it and has since acquired about 7 or 8 more. I looked in a Gravely parts book, and the filter part number listed in the book is L-857, but that's good only if you go to a Gravely dealer. They are interesting machines. Glad to hear that you fixed yours up.

Paul

From one site I found, it appears you have a 6.6 hp engine.

Try calling some of the outfits in the links below, they either have it or can tell you what it is.
