PVC Air Line

was reading the posts below yesterday about PVC for air lines, I have had it in my shop for 2 yrs and got to thinking I really should change it out after reading some of the stories. Well now I have to change it because it blew this morning, luckily no one was in the shop at the time. LESSON LEARNED

We have PVC schedule 80 air line in our shop at work,it was fine for about 5 years and then the fittings started to crack so we are slowly replacing all of it with copper lines, they're easy to work with and fittings are available at all the hardware stores.the burst pressure is higher than the PVC pipe that we had before.

The problem is there are several different types of PVC pipe. Usually when we hear PVC we think of the pipe normally used in plumbing applications. There are also softer grades of PVC that are used in many of the spiral coiled "self retracting" hoses as well as other types of air hoses.

Question? What blew?

Did a pipe burst or split? or did a fitting come undglued or did a fitting fracture?

Inquiring minds want to know.

And what is this that was mentioned in a prior post about a "green" plastic pipe intended for air? Anyone know any more about it?

Here is the manual you need to see, gives you all the details. Its large, 2768KB Acrobat file, if you don't have DSL or Cable modem, be prepared for a LONG download.

Well, just did a little Google research myself. The green pipe is an ABS pipe made by Nibco company and is called ChemAire, proper and legal for compressed air systems, can be solvent welded using proper solvents, or available with push and lock o-ring type fittings also.

There are at least a couple of companies making ABS pipe material that is certified to meet certain California requirements for compressed inert gasses (seems to be the standard everyone in the industry is using is the Calif codes).

There is also a system made by Asahi, and marketed by PEP that used a heat welded joint system and a polypropelyene pipe and fittings (bright blue), this requires special equipment and is not suited to the small shop type jobs but is aimed at large industrial installations.
