OT Odd genset ??

I picked up a little one cylinder Briggs powered genset (about 8 hp)for salvage. It has odd 120V DC and 230V,180 cycle AC outlets. The 120VDC uses two standard 120 VAC type sockets with ground,and the 230V,180 cycle AC sockets use 4 terminal twistlock plugs. The guy I got it from thought it was used for some type of road construction. What kind of machines would run on 120VDC and 230V at 180 cycles ?? This is somthing new to me ?

I once had a Hobart welder that had a receptical on it marked 70 volts D.C. I wonder what on earth Hobart had in mind there??

RWK is right, I've seen many of them over the years designed to run concrete vibrators on DC voltage. If you look at many of your name brand saws and other poswe tools many of them also show as being designed to run on either AC or DC voltage. In fact I saw a brand new Dewalt grinder the other day that had the AC/DC rating on the tag.

Pretty much any 120 volt AC motor that has brushes will run on DC as well, and some actually quite a bit better. So your drill, circular saw, sabre saw, hand grinder, buffer, etc. would all work on it. Not so with those synchronous motors that are on compressors, bench grinders, etc.

Back in the 60s & 70s I remember that the concrete vibrators that were used to be sure concrete in pillars had the air out of the mix as they were being poured ran on 230V at 180 cycles. The 120 V gave the option of adding work lights. I remember that the outfit I was working for had several / many of these and most were built by "Homelite" but there were other brands.
