Need some advice on building blast cabinet.

Hey guys I want to build a bench top sandblaster, the local shops want $500.00 for thier cheapest one and Im not going to spend that just to blast a few things here and there, I decieded to make one for under 100.00. I already have a siphon gun and what not. This is a design I plan on copying, my question is, do you think there is a slop at the bottom of this cabinet to let the sand flow down to the front bottom pickup? like under the grill where the parts sit on? looking at the picture and where the holes are for the gloves seems like there is no slope. any info would be appreciated.

Just bought one from HF on sale for less than a hunnerd bucks. About the size of the one pictured. Includes siphon gun with extra ceramic tips. HF also has the media, either sand or glass bead.Bottom hopper holds about 25 lbs of sand.
Nice red powdercoat finish. I am going to build a stand for it to get it off the bench. Need adjustable legs so I can stand with my arms in it up to my elbows without bending my knees. Ed

Hey Jay,Tip has a set of plans for a floor model that is really good.The plans are 20 bucks.I had them but I gave them to a guy named Hobo on tool talk.Hey Hobo if your done with the plans send them to Jay.I didnt want to violate copyright laws because they were copyrighted.

There is no slope inside, just the one you see on either side at the bottom. Usualy there are 4 sides to the bottom to direct the medium to a center trap door. A horizontal grate sits at the intersection of the vertical side walls and the funnel. So you have a really big square funnel with a screen/grate on top of it then a bottomless box of some sort on top of the screen/grate. All sealed to keep the medium in the box. You can get plans and parts like glove mounts, windows, latches, etc. from TIP.
You might try a fireplace glass (small) or an "old" small camper back window (big) for the window. Camper windows are about 12x40 and are safety glass. Both are already framed with hinges.

I was going to seal the top part there and make the door on the side, I think it will just be easier and have a better seal.

Some cabinets have right and left doors and possibly a top door also. Some cabinets have no door: the box is hinged at the back next to the grate. Some have a rotating table on the grate. It all depends on how fancy you want to get and how much you want to spend.

I just finished building one, a little bigger than what you are proposing, and free standing. I already had the siphon gun, and the rest was built using salvaged lumber and chip board left over from another project. I had to buy the gloves, about $25, and a light, which cost about $1.50 at an auction. I don't have any pictures yet, will try to get some up-loaded in a couple of days or so.

How about a medium? median? The stuff used for blasting, medium, median? Today hung phone cable from pole to pole to pole at a coal fired power plant. Were out where the extra fine stuff gets flushed out from the plants into ponds, and filtered pond after pond after pond, then is drug into piles, loaded up, and trucked off to...? Is like sand. A guy working with me drove his truck out into it, and I watched it sink to the axles in pretty much quicksand of fine coal. After dragging him out, he picked up a handful of it and asked me if I thought could use it for his blaster. I told him didn't see why not if parts are cleaned well afterwards, although not sure how the coal will hold up under that kind of beating. Then he told me can buy something called "black..." which he thought was coal slag. Could be, I have no clue. I've never blasted. Ever heard of it?

I love Black Beauty for my Tip sandblaster but it did not seem as good as glass shot in the blast cabinet.I tried it to speed up a job on some old light fixtures and for some reason it didnt work well [mixed with the glass beads that were still in the cabinet 50/50 mix.]

From the picture, and with the outlet at the bottom of the cabinet, i'd say it has a slopeing back panel. It would have to be, (Probably) higher than the back part where it sets on the bench. A plate welded inside at a "tilted to front" position should suffice. Or, you could rivet it together, which would be better for the home-builder! An old dish-washer cabinet could probably be made into a sand blaster, with some work. I had started to build one, but found one for sale at a garage sale instead! Rustyj
