I have a bell made of either brass or bronze. it is now "green" from lack of care. What would I use to make it shine? I'd really like to use my electric buffer to make the job go quicker. TIA

Used to make us use Brasso in the Army to do our brass. Can get it in stores, small square white and blue can. Takes some elbow grease, but... When bought our brass, came coated with shilac, and they made us get the shilac off first because dulled the shine. Works well with a rag.

Hi OB,

Soak the bell in 5% ammonia and it'll come out like new. Some brass uses a clear sealer to keep it from tarnishing so you would need to remove the sealer by soaking.

I've clean thousands of antique clocks with ammonia and it works very well and also works for gold items.

Try Flitz. Most sporting goods stores have it in the gun department.

Keep your buffer away from your bell. A little elbow grease will do the trick.

Long time ago, when I was in the military....a couple of good doses of tomato juice rubbed in well, then hosed off worked wonders to clean brass fixtures. AND it was cheap.

oleblu, Oh man don`t use a wire brush on the bell or it will be worthless in the future. If you think it may be old I would take it to an antique dealer and find out it`s "appraised" value. I would also inquire about taking the aged color off of the bell and how it would affect it`s value. If you find that you can clean it off with out hurting the value I would use a high quality brass cleaner and use only soft rags in the buffing so as not to scratch it. If you will leave it alone and not put any finger prints on it time will put a nice patina back on that will darken as time goes on. I cleaned a pair of spurs off that took over 500 dollars off too!

Thanks for the replys fellas. I know I'll NEVER use a wire brush on it, was thinking of a soft lambs wool pad. I think I'll leave it as it is for now. I never gave it a thought that I might devalue it if I clean it. All I could think about was the shiny brass color gleaming in the sun. Guess it would go well at a tractor show next to my UNRESTORED, UNPAINTED, straight off the farm, tractor. oleblu
