Hot wiring the ignition

The ignition broke in my 89 Ford. I would like to wire it to a push button for starting. As it now stands, I turn the ignition on, then start the pickup with a screw driver. How can I wire a button to avoid having to pop the hood each time I need to start the truck?

Hey Dug,
Will this be a permanent or temporary fix for the starter switch on this pickup? If it's a temp fix until you can either replace/repair the wiring, switch, and solonoid (sp) why not just hook up a remote starter button on it. You can buy them at just about any parts store and they come complete with the leads and clips.

Aint one of them "hypothetical situations" is it? You know, "I have this friend..." or "I have this '89 Ford..."? I aint gonna walk through one of them cellhouses and see you looking out through the bars at me, am I?

Just jokin, and for the record, I don't know. But if you can wait after the weekend, I can ask around. Well, now that I think about it, if they were really good at it, they wouldn't be there to ask. Never mind.

Are you simply putting in a separate, replacement starter switch, or is the ignition part of the original switch non-functional, too?

Dug, seems like we did this before. Get a starter button with two terminals, connect two wires to it that are long enough to reach from where you are going to mount the button to the solenoid under the hood. Mount the button and run the wires to the solenoid. Trace the pos battery cable to the solenoid, connect one wire from the button to the same post the pos cable is attached to on the solenoid. the solenoid will have either one or two small post with push on terminals. If it has two small post, one will have an I stamped at the base, the other will have an S stamped at the base. The S post is where the second wire from the button will attach. And now the button will start the truck.

Are you shorting the big red positive battery lead to the big black lead going to starter with your screwdriver? Or are you shorting the big red lead to the terminal that the small red striped wire on the solenoid? If you do that and the truck starts then the solenoid is ok and you are just not getting voltage on start. You can then run one wire to the big positive wire or any source of 12 volts that is always hot and the other wire to the TERMINAL on the solenoid and it will start. The ground of the solenoid is the screw attaching the solenoid to the chassis.
If the truck does not start when you apply 12 volts to the small screw terminal then you need a new solenoid.

It's not that hard of a job to tear into the stearing colum and fix it right. Might even be eaiser than what you are trying to do.

Find your soliniod, from there you run a wire from the small post on it to a switch and the other end to the battery. Most have to small posts you you will have to figure out which one is the start post.

Hi old,

The start post on the solinoid will have the hot wire coming off the battery, right? Then I would run my wire from this post to the switch, then run a second wire from the other post on the switch to the negative on the battery. Should work...

No, the soliniod will have 3 or 4 wires on it. 2 of them are haevy one will go to the battery one to the starter. Then there should be one or two other smaller wires. One of the smaller wires is the start wire. From that post you run a wire to a switch and the other side of the switch to the battery. When you hit that button it should engage the soliniod and the starter should turn the engine over. But also this is not hot wireing its doing a remote starter switch.

It would entail tearing into the steering column, not the kind of job I want to tackle. Besides, this is a farm truck, so a push button starter is no big deal. I tend to leave the keys in it anyway.

just run a wire from each point that you are jumpin with screwdriver to the push button.

Tried that, won't work.

I also ran one from the pos on the battery and the neg on the starter soleniod, still didn't work.

Seems simple, but I am missing something...
