Check Ebay and see if you can find an old farm level. They usually go pretty cheap.

Go with the water level. Mine's 100' of clear tube w/ windshield washer fluid in it. I have one of those $35 laser levels from TSC with the dot or the crosshairs and a tripod, still went back to the water level. The dog has a riot chasing the laser dot all over the yard. Aside from that it's not worth much.

string line and a line level are still hi tech to me-- fits real good in the tool belt too. Of course that clear tubing is nice too but sora awkward to keep up with. Find that laser stuff to be more of a gimic untill you get into the high end stuff with targets.

If you use a line level BE SURE IT IS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LINE - Ask how I know!

Rent one from a rental store. If you aren't planning to use it all the time it is a waste of money. If you are going to use it for more than your building, spent a couple of bucks more and get a good one.

I called the HF Tech support and they couldn't find a laser beam detector for it or a 120V power supply to be able to keep it on for sometime. I was wondering if there could be a beam detector from a different brand not CenTech, that I could get by with? bjr

Watch the accuracy rating. This one says 1/4" per 33 feet, which probably is ok, since you aren't building a church.

I also wonder how bright these are when using outside? Unless you're shooting at night, you may have problems seeing the beam in bright sunlight.

Most "quality" set-ups have a target rod that detects the laser - you really don't need to see the beam.

I am on a tight budget and can relate.

I recently did a drop ceiling in my basement and looked at all of them that were in the $150 and down range. I finally decided that the cheap ones didn"t have enough power to be seen at distance and that the accuracy range was way too wide for my taste. You should not be surprised to see accuracy stated to be +/- 1/4" in 30 feet. That"s a 1/2" range and I can"t stand that deviation. I settled on a $6.00 roll of 3/8" plastic tubing and made myself a water level. Takes 2 people to use but if you take your time it"s more accurate than you will get with a low-grade rotory unit.

Hey Bob,
I gotta agree... I've done several projects... most recent (still in progress) a 48' x 64' pole building... can't beat the price or accuracy of water!!!
Regards, DL

I'm with you, a water level is cheap and accurate. I used one when putting siding on my son's house, because we had to go around corners that you couldn't have gotten the laser beam to project to.

DL & Sonny,

I like gimics and high-tech stuff more than most but I also like to be as accurate as I can when doing stuff. I had an old water level unit that screwed on a garden hose and that was way too much work. The clear tubing was great and I now have 75 feet of range for $6.00. I have used it to do the ceiling that had around the corner stuff and ductwork that I had to dodge around. Came out great and I get lots of compliments.

Also used it to level the dirt for the concrete pour in my in my pole barn. Level marks around the perimeter and 20lb test fishing line pulled taught are my favorite tools. A little ingenuity goes a long way. I worked in a machine shop years ago and the best machinist in the plant told me that "the tools don"t make a good machinist, a guy who can can make good parts with an old machine is the best" Still true today.

My kids think I"m some sort of genius for using the water level. Not sure if I told them about the pyramids and all that stuff.

I've used the water level too, just a piece of tubing. Take a look at the link and see if it's not a better idea. I've seen those before but didn't grasp the principle of it.
