I have this jack and would like to know what caused this problem.
When in storage with the handle up and pump in the up position the oil leaks around the top of the pump shaft.
Any suggestions?

Thanks

The WS & the WSII have a smoothly polished bore that the piston seal rides in. They all leak after a while, but from one of several causes: It may be rust, wear, lack of use, improper installation of new parts or non-OE parts, etc. I would be very careful of honing in this area (but actual rust is bad too!) The new cup is still available as p/n H8005500 or as a piston assembly H0524800 from any HW service center. You may also need a new piston guide. Mind the spring! DO NOT remove the bottom plug, all parts come out from the topside.

Sounds like you are getting a little leak back through the valves. The springs are trying to pull the ram back, keeping pressure on the ram all the time. Why leave it in the up position? Open the release and leave it down and there will be no pressure to leak. The WS is an old jack, probably has a lot of wear.

I have one of those also and it began doing the same thing. The piston bore was subjected to some moisture and started to rust so that when the piston seal was in the rusty or pitted area it allowed the fluid to leak past. I honed the bore and put a new seal kit in and it seems to be holding. You could buy a new pump body for it but with the prices these days it may not be worth it.
