I got a message in my mailbox today, "if your mailbox was vandelized on 8-21 call the local sheriffs office and you may be entitled to compensation" I just got off the phone with the cop and he says that 2 kids were caught in the act on Sunday night and the kids had damaged/destroyed over 20 boxes. It is about time the cops caught a few of these kids. The cop asked me what I thought my mailbox was worth I said $50, he says I doubt you will get that but we will see. The money ought to come out of there a$$es, or their parents wallet. I have lived here 5 years and gone through 3 boxes with my current box being smashed or dented 4 times alone. I hope the punks get a few days in jail, I think they were released. I wish I could go to their house and knock some sense into them with my fist. When I was a kid I wasnt stupid enough to bust mailboxes becasue it is supposed to be a federal crime, but only if there is mail in the box.

After replacing ours about every other year, I got a 4" steel post and some 1/8" diamond plate. Had the guys at work bend the diamond plate to fit like a tent over the mailbox and weld a platform on top of the post to bolt it all onto. Moved it to a new location about 7'off the road and spread some gravel to make a wide shoulder. It is just stuck in a hole with a little gravel, no concrete. This was about 2 years ago and although they threw a concrete block at it, it hasn't been scratched. Now is is safer for us when we pull up in the car to check the mail because we are off the road. Also, if someone does try to get it swinging a bat from a car, the car will be so far off the road they will end up in the ditch.

I`ve been thru my share of mailboxes, but the cutest one was about a month ago. My wife went down to get the mail, came back up, and went in the house to get a butter knife and a paint scraper. When I asked her what she was doing, she said theres a loaf of bread in the mailbox..
Seems someone got frozen bread dough, put it in the mailbox, and in the 95 degree heat with the sun hitting it, the bread rose and filled the mailbox. It cleaned out pretty easy and we couldn`t help but laugh at someones ingenuity. Wish I would`ve thought of that years ago.
We have our suspicions as to who did it, and I think a good natured prank in return is in order..

I did some of that stuff when I was a kid, Wish I was a kid again, wish it was the worst thing I ever did. Good luck with your mail box. Lou

I had my mailbox post broken off twice by the UPS truck backing out of my driveway. I changed the location about 50 feet so it didn't line up with the driveway and then confronted the driver who wasn't aware that he had hit anything. We had a good laugh over him trying to sabotage the competion. Ed

I gave up when we moved here 11 years ago. First 3 mail boxes were tore up the night after I put them up. The sheriff and the postal inspector said they couldn't do anything unless they caught them in the act. Since then, I haven't had a mail box. Has worked very well, sure cut down on the junk mail, I just leave it at the post office in town.

I had that happen for years. Kept having to hammer out my metal box. I finally went to a plastic box. Now gratification there. It has been hit several times, but not damaged too bad. Last year, something new: run the box over with a 4x4. I put the box back in and mounted 2 reflectors on the sides. The reflectors are mounted on T posts, in concrete, with 18 in sticking up. I had a neighbor that had a large metal structur ( an old boiler ) with a door in the side for mail. The county immediately made him take it down as a roadside hazard. I wouldn't want to put anything out there that would kill somebody. Easy.

Last winter during a heavy snow, I was ran off the road by an oncoming car on Christmas morning. The mirror of my truck happened to catch a mailbox and pull the door away from the mailbox.

That evening I went knocking on their door to apologize and offer to pay for the mailbox. Actually, my wife went up to the house. The guy said, "It gets knocked down all the time. I buy the cheapest ones I can find. If the door isn"t completely off, don"t worry about it. It will only cost about $3 to replace."

Yep, a likewise minded person was found. I think we have been through 3 mailboxes in the 7 years at our house. After the first steel one, plastic $3 boxes started going up.

There are worse things to worry about than $3 and a little time, but I do get the point. The perps should pay.

Back in the 60's, we had a bunch of kids going around with a chain and grapple hook. They would zoom by, swing the chain and snag the posts. Dad lost his box one night. The next day he sunk a heavy I-beam 4' into the ground and welded a plate for the box on top. A couple of nights later, we hear a loud BANG outside, and a car speed off. Dad goes outside and finds a bumper, chain, and grapple hook attached to his mailbox post. The next morning, he and the sherrif (his cousin) check around for anyone missing a rear bumper off a Buick. Wasn't to hard to spot in the High School parking lot. The box, post and all, is still where he put it 40 years ago.

I like that line of thinking. A friend of mine 20 years ago had his parents mailbox driven over many times, well after about 3 times of that nonsense his dad, who owns a metal fab shop concreted in an all steel mailbox with an I beam for the post. Well about 2 weeks later some kid in the dead of night tore off the entire right front of his car trying to wreck the mailbox. I guess it sometimes doesnt pay to be a vandal.

A couple years ago the kids down the street got caught throwing rocks at mailboxes. Seems they threw one at a box when the lady was outside setting on the porch and saw the car. Then their buddy who was driving was stupid enough to follow the same route back to their house they took on the way out and the lady followed them home and told their parents. I don't remember how many they had damaged, but the way I heard it they were given a choice, by the lady, of buying and replacing all of them...including the instillation and a verbal apology to the homeowners involved...or she was gonna get the police involved. They got them all replaced but I think if they had had their own choice they would have preffered the cops to the extra punishment, on top of the work and apologizing, added on by their parents.

You have to be careful when constructing an indestructible mailbox. Make it as tough as you want but make sure that it is on a breakaway post. Guy a coupla roads over got tired of the snowplow taking out his box a couple of years ago so he sunk a section of railroad rail into the ground and welded a plate steel box to the top of it. Plow hit it again at about thirty MPH. Home owner bought the county a new wing for their truck and paid a hefty fine to the state for constructing a roadside hazard.

I also think most states have a "break away" law for posts planted on the road side. Let one of those tin can compacts hit a RR post and see how fast you get sued.

I've been a victim of this type of thing, but I fought back by investing in a vide osecurity system. There is absolutely no fooling the camera, and it a guaranteed conviction, and no good defense lawyer will let it go to trial, They will plead guilty. Just recently, my friend taped a teenager cutting the plumbing from beneath the portable classrooms at the school. Turned out it is the son of one of the staff! Court pending.....

Knew a guy years ago that kept finding his mailbox pulled up and thrown in the creek next to his drive. After several times he embedded broken razor blades in the post. Went out to get the mail one Monday and had blood on the post, but it was not pulled up. Never happened again. Of course if you did that today you would get put in jail.

1/4" steel home made box or one inside of one of those large ones with concrete around it will solve the problem. Then again so does a warning shot in the air.

I had a guy tell me about one, that the small one was concreted in the large one. The first kid that hit it with a ball bat broke his arm. Boo Hoo Boo Hoo. It is a wander the mail box owner didn't get sued.

Like john d , I too had my new box, newly letterd , erected in a milk can taken completely. When the cops came to investigate, they pretty much said there wasn't much they could do , BUT , if I heard who did it , to contact them. My answer was , that if I ever found out who did it , THEY would be the ones to call the police !!!

10 years or so, ago,in a town near here, some teens were smashing boxes one night... One leaned out too far got snagged on the box, & was killed... As the Police Chief said "Things like that can happen, when people do stupid things", or something to that effect... I remember the Liberals were upset at his comments...

Good luck with your compensation. Here in Ohio I'm sure that I had less rights then the kids that destroyed my mailbox. They only had to pay for the cost of the box. My time was not compensated, my name on the box was not covered. I was not allowed to go to the trial since they were juviniles. I thought the kids should have been out there replacing the boxes, but I was wrong. You don't even recieve and apology. Thanks for letting me vent.

Look, is just a mailbox, an inadement object, easily replaceable for just a few dollars (paper) on your behalf. No real harm was done, and allowing these youngsters a few moments of harmless fun is a cheap price to pay for allowing them to find some self awareness and development. As a matter of fact, you should go apologize to them for even questioning it. So, take a chill pill. OK???

Midwest, now that I've sent your blood pressure through the roof, I merely tried as best I could to think and react liberal mindedly, and I just can't do it. I can't, I can't, I can't.

Not only should they have to replace the mailboxes (yours included), they should have to plant them in the ground as well. They did it, they got caught, they make it right. That being said, I feel like myself again, and much much better now. Ahhhh... Good luck.

Mark

Been through that also. Some kids got close to 30 in one night in our neighborhood about 20 miles north of Indy. In my case and the one just south of us, they didn't bash the boxes, they TOOK them - post and all.

I don't have that problem anymore, I get my mail in town. But there is a fix, build the mailbox out of 1/4 steel plate, But build it to look like the ones you buy that are easy to smash with a baseball bat. Don't stick it in the bar ditch, because it needs to be break a-way or lite weight on the rite-a-way, put it on your fence row, It sure will make their teeth rattle when smacked with a baseball bat.

I made one of those for Dad years ago, complete with a 3" plate on top for his name. The plate was ground to a decent edge. The day after I put it up, Dad stopped by and got out of the truck carrying a brand new expensive aluminum baseball bat with a nasty gash and kink in the sweet spot. It still had 'Happy 11th birthday Tommy' written in sharpie marker just above the grip!
Dad said he'd like to hear that explained to "Tommy".

Yep we get a lot of the same, but no one is ever caught. Recently a few miles north, we had 50 tombstones toppled and broken. NO arrests. Guess these destructive fellows need something constructive to do, like work on a chain gang.
