Got a new northern tool catalog yesterday and it had two troy built chain saws in it. They are priced in the $159.00 to $169.00 price range. Just woundering if anyone has one or know anything about them?

A $50 saw with $100 of name assosiation attached to it. If you must go cheap go Poulan, at least they supply parts. Last time I was at Lowes I noticed 4-5 different identical but name badged riding lawn mowers including Troy built, all laughers. What they did to products bearing the names Troy built, Bolens etc should not be legal IMO.

Don't walk away , Run!!!! Mtd is well known for taking a perfectly good product and making it into a not so good product....i.e. Cub Cadet, Troybilt, and now a shirt-tail business bought by one of the upper management....Meyers Snowplow

shy away from troy bilt there customer service outright is terrible esp trying to get parts on macnhines pre merger. also as stated before sthil is having huge problems with the new 2 stroke design. or 4 stroke i guess htey call it. chainsaws by far by far the absoulute best hands down is JONSERED by far that is the best chain saw ou tthere. old mac saws are good hard to start (old i mean the 650's) the john deere 60v are good saws but again old. but by far jonsered will eat every other saw hands down. although when you drop the saw out of a tree (i dont condone climbing with a saw to start with or running it over you wont feel so bad if you have a troy bilt

Johnred is owned by Electolux, same as Husky and Poulan, all current Johnnies are either Huskies or Poulans painted red.

It won't matter which saw you get, as long as it says Stihl on it.
I have one that is 18 years old. I've bought new spark plugs, bars and chains - but that's it!
Last week I put a gallon of gas through her clearing a tree row. A gallon is a lot for a chainsaw...

I hear you on the Stihl chainsaws, I bought a one year old Stihl 024 several years ago so that I could take two saws with me to the timber. The other saw was a Homelite 150. It only took one trip to the timber to convince me, the Homelite went in the iron pile when I got home.

Jay, you said the magic word, "25 years", the saws made then were excellant saws, some of the newer ones are not worth taking home. Just my experience from working on the little monsters!!

I have about 7 various breeds of chainsaws . The best one I feel is the Husky ( easy starting, fast cutting with lots of power ). Doesn't matter what breed ya get , they all can hurt ya big time , so , just follow safety rules . Ken

Amen,
A couple of years ago, I was over at the local Ace hardware store picking up a few items when a young urban professional came in to bring back the Husqavarna chain saw he had just bought. The lady at the cash register didn't know how to help him, so I took a look at it. He was sweaty and upset that the saw would run, but the chain would not move. I asked him if the chain brake was set. He looked at me like I was from Mars. He didn't have a clue what I was talking about. I picked up the saw and dis-engaged the chain brake bar and freed up the chain for him. I explained to him what kickback was and he still didn't understand. So I told him about the scar my dad has right above the hairline that runs about 8 inches he got from an old chainsaw back in the 60's without a chainbrake. He finally started to get the picture.
