Got a couple sets of those myself. They work real nice for holding pipe when turning fittings on or off. Just find a collar that will slide all the way down the handle. Adjust the thumb screw so the tip of the handles are even and drive the collar down the handle. Jaws will clamp tighter than haities.

Pipe tong in reply to BURT, 08-22-2005 15:19:00
Burt --

You've got a pair of "pipe tongs", which are generally considered to be an early-day pipe wrench. The screw is used to adjust the jaw opening to fit different pipe sizes.

For all practical purposes they are used just as you would use a heavy-duty Channellock or Knipex water pump pliers; once they get a firm bite on the pipe they'll hang on as long as you keep pressure on the one handle . . . you shouldn't need to keep squeezing the handles together.

Thank you for the info. They were found underneath a house that was being remodeled.

Thank you again,

Steven
