Here in Iowa the standard pickup license plates are for 3 ton (6000#). My 1/2 ton 4x4 pickup with a topper weighs 5700# with me and 1/4 tank of gas. This gives me a legal payload of about 300# without a passenger. What are others doing in similar situation. One of the guys here at work has a 3/4 ton 4 door 4x4 and he says it weighs 6800# empty and he also has the 3 ton license.

CT Combination (i.e. you can use the parkways, and you don't get weight inspections...)
$81 for 3,000# upto $245 for 10,000#. 2years.

CT Commercial $1.16/100lbs, plus $10, minimum of $34. 1 Year. (Over 20,000# the fees increase even more...)

CT Farm $28, 2 Years.

KY Farm Plate, good to 38,000 pounds GCVW. $14.50 a year plus property tax of about $1.00 per thousand of assessed value. No tag on the trailer needed if used for agricultural use.

When I was in IL, used to sometimes see pickups with RV plates, which I guess was legal to sneak one's way into. The thing was, pickups had "B" truck plates which allowed up to so many GVW, and were "D" plates which were an increased GVW. Don't know if was a "C". Many towns had ordinances that would allow a "B" plate to be parked out on the street, would get you a ticket if had a "D" plate, AND some places won't allow either to be driven on some streets. Years ago was on my way to a hockey game and found out can't drive on Columbus Dr, Lakeshore DR, and some others named "...Boulevard", cause sure got a ticket for that "B" truck plate. Copper told me if had a "RV" plate, no ticket.

Here in Indiana is about the same as yours. Get tags for 6K, or more.

Mark

AH, a LOADED question! (sorry for the bad pun).
Be careful with tagging it for more than the GVW limit of the truck. You can pretty much licence the vehicle for anything you want, but if you exceed the legal weight limit of your truck, then you are opening yourself up to all kinds of possibilities if you happen to have an accident. I've had a relative and two friends run into a hassle with insurance companies (three different ones) over being tagged higher than the legal limit for their vehicle. They were told that the higher plates allowed them to exceed the weight limit and HAD they been under the weight limit, the accident MAY not have happened (even though none of the 3 were at fault). One accident in Nebraska, one in Iowa, one in Missouri. Check with your insurance carrier.

In MO You can get 6000 Local or beyond Local, or Local with a F sticker on them to make them Farm plates. Or you ca do the same with 12000 or 18000 or 24000. I ran 18000 on my 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive, as I also did on my 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive before the 3/4. I proabley couldn"t have scaled some of the loads I had on tralers. I was in a meeting onced by a DOT Officer and he said only 6000 lic. were not requried to cross the scales.

Kansas tags have stickers denoting the CGVW, that includes the truck, cargo, and loaded trailer (if any). The "standard" tag for a half ton is marked 12M for 12000 lbs. It is possible to tag a 1/2 ton at the next step up, which I believe is 16M (may be 14M), even if that exceeds the towing capacity of the pickup, which it does. My pickup, with a Farmall Super H on the trailer, wife, dog, misc luggage, etc, is about 12500 lbs (it was weighed in this configuration) so I am technically illegal. In Iowa, I imagine you can get a higher rated tag, if you want to pay for it. In Kansas the additional cost is about $75, I believe.

Howdy CNKS, I noticed you are technically over your gcwr limit for your tag when haulling your Super H. I believe this can be easily eliminated. First throw the wife out of the truck at the first sign of a weigh station or DOT officer and any misc. luggage;(wife=125-175lbs., your luggage 5-10lbs, your wifes luggage atleast 350lbs+++). If this doesn't light'n your load by 500lbs., then clean out the floor board of the truck, if your like me that should be could for atleast 25-30lbs. BUT,BUT,BUT, for goodness sake man what ever you do don't loose the dog or the tractor!!!!!

The standard license fee for the base 3 ton plate in Iowa is $65. This fee drops as the vehicle ages. You can increase the weight on the license by the ton, Base is 3 ton, next step up is 4 ton, etc. I am paying over $300 for my 10 ton plates, so if you wanna play, you gotta pay, but it's better to pay up front than to get caught and pay the fine. We used to get a sticker that went on the plate, after that we were to stick the sticker on the door. Now there are no indications on the plate itself, it is indicated on the registration certificate.

I have 10 ton plates on my dually because I quite often pull a trailer. I think if your pickup is not used for hauling then it doesn't matter what it weighs, the 3 ton plates will still cover it, but don't take my word for it, check with the person at the license bureau, some of those laws are open to interpretation. I do know for sure that anytime you are hauling cargo your truck needs to be licensed for the correct weight. I do live in Iowa, and the girls at the bureau really didn't know all the answers either.

Here in NY you can register your truck up to the GVW with commercial plates or you can put passenger plates on a 1/2 ton. With commercial plate you can be stopped by DOT and scaled. If you have passenger plates you can do anything you please, just don't be looking like a contracter.
