JB Weld Heat Exchagner

Our oil furnace heat exchanger(cast iron) has a hairline crack in it.
Runs horizontal for an inch or so seeps water out. Was wondering if anyone had any luck with JB Welding an oil furnace. Would you drill the ends of the cracks to stop the propagation? Thought about trying to braze it with nickel as the filler but I'm not so confident in my brazing ability in the space I have to work.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Hi JB,

It's a very bad idea to try and repair a heat exchanger crack. How the crack got there is from the exchanger expanding and contracting so many times that the metal is now fatiqued. The next time it carcks it will usually be larger thus spuing more hot water.

A person walking by just as rupture happens will have scars the rest of there life from 180� water.

Replace heat exchangers, don't repair.

Not going to mess with it. Turns out the manufacturer has a recall for the heat exchanger a casting issue. Will find out in a few days if its covered thanks for the replies.

I use Permatex Hi-Heat Metal Repair Compound to repair cracked exhaust manifolds, it is "OK" to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. A tube costs $ 7.34 at our Auto Parts House.

Not likley to work. JB weld turns to a liquid and drips off at under 400 degrees.

I used it on a Ford 9N cracked block. About 4-5" long, it stopped the leak. But there's little pressure in the block. If you can get to the inside of the crack the JB Weld should work. Even if you put it on the outside and it leaks you're only out $3-$4. Clean the area well and let it set up for a few days before using. Or check industrial suppliers or a marine supply for a water proof epoxy.

Might be a good idea to replace that furnace. The carbon monoxide may get to you !
