Air compressor drain blocked

My new this year , Porter-Cable compressor is clogging up the drain valve on the bottom of the tank. This would be a simple, screw in to drain affair. I have been draining daily, but am getting blockages that are binding up the threads on the screw. If I take this valve out, is there something I can put on the threads to prevent fouling? Or do I need to buy a new valve? Thanks for suggestions.

I have used the 1/4" ball valves on 2 compressor drains for years now with no problems. Buy a good quality stainless or brass ball valve and not the cheapest one you find. Compressor vibration will make the valve come apart. Also use brass or stainless pipe for valve extension if possible or steel pipe will rust out faster.

I'll bet your new compressor is a dry (oilless pump) type that runs at very high RPM, makes LOTS of noise and gets real hot, tank and compressor.

These units generate lots of water condensation in the tank, and guess what, the tank isn't painted inside, so without the oil residue from a regular, oil lubricated pump, the tank rusts like crazy. That is what is clogging your threads.

Dump the tank pressure, remove the valve and install a street ell fitting, a length of pipe, a 1/4 ball valve, a barbed fitting and a length of air hose (3 ft or so) This way you can hold the hose in a bucket or other container, and open the valve and drain the water.

Also, start saving now for a real compressor, and a hearing aid, you will need it.

I had a friend who bought a dry compressor from sears, took it back, couldn't work in his garage with it running, it was so loud. He bought a portable, iron pump, oil lubricated, Quincy compressor.

A co worker also had an oilless compressor, didn't keep it long before he sold it, too noisy.

The compressor is NOT oilless! I listened to all the experts on here and paid more for a good piece of equipment that will not make me deaf. Ball valve sounds like a much better system than was designed by an educated man in a dirt free world.

Check a local hdwre. They make a brass valve, 1/4 turn to open and the same to close.

Kent---

I am using a stainless ball-valve and brass pipe to vent mine.....just flip the handle and blow the water out...
I would think soft copper would work well as a drain line (no pressure on it)....

That drain has a standard 1/4" National Pipe Thread mount I suspect. If you have room, why not replace it with a small ball or other type valve?
