Hello, I have an enclosed trailer and need air for air tools, lite clean up, etc. Rather then have a aircompresser, would a bottle of nitrogen work, and if so, does it last long? Thanks in advance.

Hi raxco;
For additional feedback, do a searh here on either nitrogen and/or CO2.
Good luck,

I sometimes have to use a plasma cutter on a job site and I didnt want to buy and maintain a compressor for this since it is not that frequent. I went to my local welding supply where they know me well to get a bottle of nitrogen and they talked me into compressed air instead. Same type bottle 2500 psi- 280 cubic feet or so. much cheaper!! I have a water trap on the plasma anyways and you could always add one in line on your setup.

Its lasts long to fill tires ,air shifter tank, etc.but it cost alot of money for the guage and also does not support life.Meaning a leak in the truck could be dangerous.Air tools drain it much faster. At the race track everyone wants to borrow it.The only reason I would use it is if I had to fill a small air shifter tank to 125 psi If possible go compressor for economy. It is not a harmless gas as some may think.

I keep a bottle of nitrogen here to air up tires, & run an impact, where I cannot get air. Last tank is over a year old, still not empty. It has a regulator, I usually set it to 100-125 pounds. I think it cost around 18 dollars, last time i had it filled..... . One thing to remember, Nitrogen displaces air, so do not use it in an enclosed area, unless you have good ventilation.....

Some of the off-road 4WD guys use CO2 bottles for refilling their tires and also for operating air tools. There is a whole cottage industry specializing in CO2 tanks and fittings for providing this degree of portability. One discussion of a home-made setup, together with pointers to purpose-build systems may be found at the link below. You'll need a non-siphoning tank, as would be used for beverages, and not a siphoning tank (used in fire extinguishers).

CO2 stores as a liquid at reasonable temperatures and pressures, so you get a whole lot more gas volume out of a reasonable sized tank. As long as you don't try to do something stupid like run a sandblaster at 15 CFM for 10 minutes straight, the regulator should not freeze up due to the liquid to gas transition. If your trailer can be sealed up tight, you should be careful to provide some ventilation if you use either CO2 or Nitrogen inside the trailer. Both are safe inert gases, but both can displace oxygen from the space you are attempting to occupy, leaving you to asphyxiate.

Hi Raxco,

Take the cfm requirement of the tool you want to use and divide it into the cylinder size in cubic feet.

Example: 15cfm tool and a 260cft cylinder
260/15= 17min

At that rate of flow your air tool will get pretty cool in your hands using nitrogen and expensive to use, about $60cyl refill, $150 cyl cost.

They make a 12v air pump, about $100, that you could use to fill a larger storage cylinder. Both for about $200.

You would also need to use a compressor run timer as those 12v compressors are only rated light duty. Look at compressors for air springs or air horns.

Wait a minute. Doesnt pressure get thrown in the equation? Like 260cf of Nitrogen at 2500psi is a whole lot more nitrogen than 260cf at 125psi.

Nitrogen is alot safer than air. Nitrogen is not fuel to a flame.

The 260 CF reference is to the gas volume at standard conditions, usually 68 deg F and atmospheric pressure. That's why you can squeeze 260 CF of gas into a bottle of about 3 CF actual volume. It's the 260 CF put into a 3 CF space that raises the pressure to the 2500 psig.

260 CF is 260 CF. The size of the container would be different. At a higher pressure, you have the convenience of a smaller bottle. It depends on the goal.
