I have a thin crack in the manifold of my old farm tractor. What is the best way to fix it? I am familiar to welding but have never tried cast before. Would it hold after going though so many heating/cooling cycles over the past 60 years. I would like to save this one. Seems replacements are import scrap I'd like to stay away from. Thanks

Never had good luck welding manifolds. What I do instead, clean the area, I drill a hole at the ends of the cracks to relieve the stress, and then use a wood stove cement.

Joe ,

Manifolds are quite repairable is done properly ,oxy/acet weld using cast iron in
stick form with preheat and post heat with
very slow cooling . below is a link to some repair.

I like your bolt cutter/hold downs. They seem to be getting the job done on the vise repair.

Rob,

I'm late ,but I'm here. Where in pa are you?

Send me a couple pictures so I can see the

damage.

When repairing cast , leave the arc welder

turned off .

George- I don't have digital pictures I can send. I'm near Pittsburgh. My manifold crack is about two inches long and real thin. All I have is the stick welder. The manifold is looking real bad (exhaust part). I would like to save it but wonder if maybe time for another one. The tractor has started to act up and wonder if it may be cracked inside between the intake and exhaust areas. Thanks everyone for replying.

Rob, If you can get it to Ft Necessity , I have a friend working there as an inspector on a new building and he will be coming down here in the next few weeks . I have his pickup here working
on it. Also have a deere head and block from near brownsville here to work on . Was too busy to go
to the show at brownsville this weekend , went the last two years.

A lot will depend on how bad it is and where it is. If you do try to weld it you will need to use NI rod. But a lb of it is like $10

If you have little or no experience welding cast then a manifold is not a good place to start.George from Maryland is a good one to have weld it.If he doesn't happen along soon,I have his e mail address somewhere on this desk. You really need a forge or better yet an oven that you can control the heat in ,even better than a forge.
