Do any of you have any experience on using these, and if so, what brands do you recommend or would recommend staying away from. I am thinking of putting one in my existing woodburning fireplace insert. It is a rated and approved insert about 10 years old. Will probably use the ventless type.

Bob, I have a natural gas (also made in propane) venter insert made by Heatilator. I use it in the early Fall / late Spring for those quick cold nights. I heats very well and was installed in one day. Due to the age of my chimney, I opted for a liner kit. Mine is a Semi-flexible stainless which was installed easily. I dropped a rope down, clamped it onto the liner and pulled it up. Fasten in to the termination cap and to the stove at the bottom. I didn't fasten the cap to the chimney, the pipe weight holds it down just fine (my idea was that if the pipe came unhooked and fell down, the cap would be loose and noticeable).

I do think that there is a quality difference between the Home Depot and Lowe's stuff and regular / servicing dealers.

Good Luck,

Bill

Better see what your home owners insurance man says about that. If it's not rated for gas you might not be covered. something to think about.

We had a Lopi propane Log set up that was freestanding which is about like the insert. It vented thru a flue and we heated an 1800 sq ft home with it. It was in an area of Wa state where the temp would get down to around 15 at times. We backed it up with elect heat. Worked well and is still in use by the new owner.

I burned wood in ny fireplace for years. Then installed a propane ventless gas log unit, It heats the room very well with very little gas odor.
My problem is that in the summer, the chimney emits an oder of burnt wood or creosote into the room, especially when very humid. I have had the chimney cleaned professonally, but still the odor. Anyone have any suggestions?

That sure is a problem with old chimney's, I would suggest scrubbing it out with Bleach water, but that's vary hard to do, especially if there's no opening at the bottom, If your chimney has an opening at the bottom, that may be a possibility, that sometimes will check the odor, but not always. If you don't have an opening, think about putting one in, but if that's not an option, then all you can do is, drop a small fan down the chimney just for the summer time, or just put the fan in the flue to get the air to move out the chimney. good luck,

Bob,

I moved into a really run-down old farm house about 7 years ago. It had a wood burning stove that was vented into a masonry fireplace with a masonry chimney. I removed the wood burning stove and eventually installed central heat and air. I was interested in burning wood in the fireplace, but first I hired a chimney sweep to come out and inspect the chimney. He STRONGLY advised against burning in the fireplace since the chinking was missing throughout the height of the chimney.

Rather than spend what would have been necessary to fix the chimney, I chose to have it capped at top and bottom, and I installed a vent-free propane insert.

I like the appearance of the insert, but it provides no heat to the room and I can smell the burnt propane to some extent. I also have a propane stove in the kitchen. The amount of odor from the insert is about the same as the odor from the stove. If you don't mind the odor, the vent free insert might be pretty good for you.

I don't remember the brand right now. I bought it at Home Depot.

Good luck,

Tom in TN
