Any Ffffff EFI experts here? my freaking POS F150 is drivin' me batty! The damned thing will not stay running below 2000 rpm. It's a 1990, 302, 5 spd, with AC. I get a code 33, which means EGR Valve position sensor not closing. Ok, my EGR valve was sticking , I got that freed up. But I also get a code 67, which supposedly is some transaxle pressure sensor, and I don't have a damned transaxle. Anyone know what 67 means on that truck? It is absolutely undriveable, stalls even shifting gears at 3 grand, and I'm 450 miles from home!

You've gotten some good advice from other folks on here. I'm at a loss, though, as to why you're calling a 15 year old vehicle a POS. I know it's frustrating when you're truck won't run but you make it seem like it's the manufacturers fault. I'm not going to make assumptions about it's care or maintenance but you can't expect a vehicle of that age and dubious condition to perform as new. Just fix it and be thankful it's lasted this long.

Sam :)

Reason I call it a POS is it has been nothing but problems to me the whole time I've had it. Well over 8 grand worth of repairs in 100,000 miles, never mind normal consumables like tires and brakes, oil, filters, etc. If it were any other make, it might be tolerable, but Ford has a tendency to not allow you to buy parts, only complete assemblies. Cost of ownership is insane on this thing! Regular maintenance I believe in and I have no problem whatsoever in keeping a vehicle mechanically sound, but simple failures like a plastic hose bursting that because of Ford's stupid quick disconnect fittings that don't quick disconnect, or disconnect at all, that wind up costing a grand to fix, are a bit ridiculous! or how about a bearing in a front aouto-locking hub that you can't buy. Should be a 10 dollar bearing, but no, it's well over 1000 bucks for a complete set of hubs, because you can't buy just the bearing. And the list goes on and on! Forever. Cost of ownership even including high dollar registration and insurance is less than half for any of my other vehicles, even the 75 grain truck and the 60 Kenworth! All of the rest of my road vehicles are between 28 and 45 years old and not one has cost me even half of what this Ford has to keep running for the equivalent amount of miles.

Thanks guys. That last site helped. I was having trouble finding a list of what the codes meant. manufacturer should have to include that in the owners' manual! Anyway, I'm sure glad this is happening now instead of in the dead of winter in -40. Would be simple if there was a garage around with a mechanic, but the nearest one is 160 miles away. Sure makes me want to go back to carburetted vehicles.

Howdy, I agree, the a/c was on while the codes were pulled to cause a 67.

As for the stall, on the Fords, your on the right track. Egr is normally a good place to look.

Next most likely place is the Idle control solenoid. They can stick and cause the stall, I"ve had a lot of them, especially the plastic ones, do this and a sharp rap with a hammer frees them up, they then work but should still be replaced.

The other very important place to look is the throttle plates. Have a helper hold the gas pedal on the floor with the engine off. Look at the throttle plates and see if they are coked up real bad. If it looks like a coal mine in there, take an old tooth brush and carb cleaner to it. Scrub the entire plate surface on both sides, then scrub the areas where the plates rest with the throttle closed. This is a big problem for the fords. There may be a sticker on the throttle housing that says not to clean it, but that won"t matter on older units, it"s only for new engines.

Cheers, Chris.

sounds like you have a bad vacuum leak. make sure the egr valve is clean. check pcv valve. I have seen the plastic ones break apart and cause problems. make sure all vacuum hoses are hooked up. code 67? was the a/c system turned on when you checked codes. the air by-pass valve could be stuck, this would cause the no idle problem. good luck, Gene

Hi Stickler,

The first thing I would do is reset the puter, disconect the battery for 1/2hr or more. This resets the puter to the system defaults and sometimes will clear minor problems wihtout any other work.

Another item often over looked is a bad ground.

I agree with Bob that you need to use a better scanner. The economy scanners are pretty worthless, and if you buy a good one or have your truck diagnosed by aomeone with a good scanner, you'll save $$$ in replacing parts needlessly.

I tend not to drive Fords, but they normally do run well, and likely it's a simple problem that's causing you grief. Settle down, quite the swearing (even if it's a bit "veiled"), and lets get to the bottom of this problem!

Dorf vehicles, at least when the codes are read with a non-dealer code reader, are notorious for throwing weird codes that don't correspond to the way the vehicle is equipped. Don't worry about the bogus code, concentrate on getting it to run.

My suspicions are:

1. EGR still sticking, or sensor on top of EGR bad. (Replace EGR AND sensor... it's very seldom that a sticky EGR can be permanently "cured".)

2. Idle control motor bad, or sticky. (Replace it... even if you clean an ornery one, and get it to work for a while, the success is usually short-lived.)

3. These units are notorious for blowing the gasket between the upper and lower intake manifold, and sucking in air, and refusing to idle.

I'm reading the codes by the check engine light, not a scanner, and of course don't have a real translation of what the numbers are. That's why i asked about 67. The only info I could find online lists that as transaxle pressure. That would be on small cars, I guess. It must have a different meaning on trucks. No garage withing 160 miles of here. I did try replacing the egr sensor with a known good one off a neighbour's truck. No better. After freeing up the EGR, it's a little better, as in it doesn't stall now until about 2 grand, but that's still ridiculous.

I agree with Bob, the EGR valve sticking open will cause the engine to die at lower RPMs. I know on my Grand Marquis it was a PIA to get to and replace.

Stickler,

It's kinda slow and kinda cumbersome, but I go to a forum named ford-trucks.com for info on my 1997 Ranger. They have sections for all models of Ford products, so you might find something there.

Also, if you have an Autozone anywhere near, I've found them to be very helpful with codes.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

Could it be the electrinic ignition module? My '88 w/ 300 just quit at an intersection in a red light. Got it towed to the shop and they replaced the module, runs like a top now.

Also, try on the trucks forum, last one on the list
