Has any one out there had Trex or other brand composite decking for any length of time? I am curious how it holds up to the sun/time. I expect color fade but am curious about any other negatives. Cracking? slivers? other problems/breakdown? I'd plan on closer joists if I use composite plastic... I am fed up with pressure treated pine. I am debating cedar, mahogany....and plastic composite deck plank for the next project. Anybody have any experience in these choices?

My Boss (wife) and I built a 700 square foot irregularly shaped deck for a very particular customer to whom money was no object. He spent over $11,000 on that deck.

Joist were 2x12 on 12 centers and the decking was whatever Home Depot was selling at the time (couple years ago). There were NO screws showing the decking was screwed from the bottom using metal brackets and ten thousand screws (by actual calculation).

It was difficult at times to keep the decking as tight as he wanted (no gap) and we had to use clamps, wedges and leverage. Surprisingly, the manufactured boards did take a set and did vary some in thickness and width (though not too much).

The deck was stunning and still is. Even grease stains come off with no effort. An occasional washing is all the maintenance required.

If that man was happy with it (he was decidedly happy), anyone would be.

When we built our own deck we used pressure treated lumber (cost IS a consideration for us) and we dont use 2 x 12 joist or 12 spacing (2 x 6 or 8, depending on span, on 24 centers with 2 x 6 decking).

I've used Timbertech, tongue and groove. First deck (porch @ 9'x35') is now 4 years old. Great to work with, easy to clean. Bleach it once per year. WILL NOT sag if properly installed (16" on center) and is probably less of a fire hazard than dry wood decking. We love it...each piece was arrow straight and has stayed that way. Little to no shrinkage. $2/linear foot...pricey, but worth it.

I used Trex on the porch on my camp in '01. The underneith is 2x6" pressure treated on 24" which in retrospect was too big but you live and learn. It looks just as good today as it did when I built it. I'm building a dock out onto our pond soon and I'll use that stuff again.

yes the color changes just make sure you get enough and some for damage.

Most here had me leaning to Trex... There"s a local discount house here in upstate NY called Grossmans. They sell composite decking made by the "Elk Corporation". The Elk website looked good but I thought it was a cheapie imitation cause Grossman"s sells it for $1 a foot for 5/4x6" plank. I has asked Grossmans how they can sell it for $1 a foot. They said they just buy a container of whatever color Elk will make them a deal on. Hmmmmm A replier to this post said he wanted Elk composite but mahogany I think it was he referenced was cheaper. Gee maybe Elk brand ain"t a cheapie imitation... I"m gonna have to go back & look at that.. Overall I"m now sure I want the composite decking I now just have to judge $2.27 a foot at Home Depot for Trex or $1 a foot for the Elk brand. Anybody out there use the stuff from the Elk Corporation?

I replaced my ratty looking wood deck 3 years ago with Trex. So far I am completely satisfied with it. This is in Northern Indiana where we get all kinds of weather.

I don't have any insight for you, on this question, but...

I sure am glad that you asked it!!

A deck is on my "honey-do" list and we're seriously contemplating the plastic for decking material..

I'd semi planned to replace my porch with the plastic, until I stood there looking at them in the sun.

They sag, big time!

It wasn't so obvious inside the air conditioned stores, but outside, the bundles and stacks of plastic decking planks were sagging several inches in between supports. A lot more sagging than I considered to be acceptable.

I just built a deck 6 weeks ago, looks good. I was going to buy the Elk corp vinyl decking but due to price, double the price of cedar 1x6's I opted for the Cedar which will last 12-15 years and is not as flammable as the vinyl. Plus the vinyl is not able to have the color changed. I guess you cant paint it.

Check that plastic/ composite decking for its fire ratings! We had a house burn badly after a small grass fire flared up and set the plastic decking on fire! I don't know what the trade name was, but it is good to check them all!

I used Nexwood composite planks for my 18x20 deck on the West side of my house. I built it in 2001 and used all pressure treated framing members and stainless fasteners. It looks better now than when I built it, as it weathered to a nice gray color. It started as a greenish shade.

The care is minimal--I just hose it off fairly often. There was a little buildup of lichen in a shaded area, but a weak bleach solution took care of that.

Would I use that product again? You bet! It was easy to work with and not all that much more costly than good quality redwood. Considering the care costs of real wood, it may eventually actually be cheaper than wood.

Will it hold up? Time will tell.... If I remember correctly there was something like a 20 year warranty. That is assuming the company still exists.

The composite feels great under bare feet and almost never gets too hot to walk on. And no slivers or rub-off. Yeah, I'd do it again!

Nexwood has a website that I recommend looking at. I used it on my deck in 2002 and it still looks great. One hint is to have the stringers on 16 inch centers because the composite has no grain to keep it rigid. The railings on my deck are in 8 foot sections and I slid 2 -2x2 pine boards inside the each rail to help keep them from sagging otherwise I would recommend supporting them every four feet. Nexwood also makes 4x4" sleeves to slide over 4x4" square poles.Another benefit to using a composit is it will not give anyone a sliver if they rub up against it. This is expecially important if the grandkids come visiting. Oh yes, the downfall to using a composit is you will have do dig deeper into your pockets to pay for it but in the long run it is well worth it. Jim

A local marina used plastic 2X6's for its docks about ten years ago. In the hot sun they are very springy, perhaps because of the 2' centres. The decking has held its colour well and warps only when not secured. The only downside for dock material we have found is that it doesn't hold nails or screws well enough to provide reliable tie-downs for heavy boats.

Lowes had in stock both Trex and ChoiceDek. I liked the ChoiceDek better and bought it. Installed with stainless steel screws. No regrets. Supports not more than 16" apart.

I built a deck for a B&B out of Trex about 10 years ago. Absolutely no complaints whatsoever. After it weathered to a sort of silvery-gray color, it stablized and looks like the day I put it up.
