hello to all, truck broke down yesterday and i believe its the throw out bearing. 5 sp. 2500 4x4. does anyone know appr. cost to have mechanic install same ? how much time? i'm also thinking of doing the work myself to save money, can anyone tell me the procedure and if it will require any specialty tools ? i already have all wrenches ,sockets, floor jack, creeper, ramps. all responses are welcome and thanks to all of you. david

I would stay from the cheap clutch kits from auto zone had a few fail and I would have the flywheel machined also and make sure you get a shim to put behind the flywhell the same thickness they machined off

As some of the others said...you can do it if you"re mechanical inclined, be nice if you knew a mechanic friend too. I been thru this on a 92 Chev half ton 4x4. I"ll vouch for the "replace everything"...Mine had a new clutch disc put in and the clutch wouldn"t release enough to shift and it was sold to my son for a bargain. I jumped at it and tore it down...t o bearing had wear along with clutch arm and the pin the arm pivots on...pressure plate and disc were okay. Started calling parts houses for prices and could get everything but the pivot pin. GM dealer said $16 and change, so I rounded up the parts and stopped at the GM dealer for pivot pin. Said he made a mistake on price...it was $61 and change...( bite hole in lip here). Put it all together and it still would grind...reason...the replacement throw out bearing was the short one...It took the long one. I gotta tear it back down. (insert curse words here)...or hit parts man in mouth! The pivot pin has a zerk fitting on outside of the bell housing that probably never gets greased..it is hollow so grease gets to the business end. Also, while you got it apart, check the transfer case shifter forks...if the plastic pieces are worn out...it"s metal to metal and pretty soon will not shift into 4 wh. drive...or stay in 4wh. drive. That"s my experience with one....you"ll need at least two good men to reinstall the transmission or the correct trans jack and concrete floor. Fred OH

DB, My nephew had an estimate from a chevy dealer of $1100 to replace the clutch on his 96 K 2500 a year ago. I think he ended up hireing one of the dealer's mechanics to do it on the side. 3 cyl

Macs on the right track. Unless you have done a lot of pulling etc I would think you would have a problem with the hyd system of the clutch. Those system are known to mess up, the hyd clutch system is a good system but now days they use to much plastic and that causes problems. Throw out bearings don't just go bad you here them a long time before they go.

Need a better diagnosis than "I believe" its the throw out bearing. When tearing into something like this, you as well replace the clutch also. Depends on miles. It may be something else or as simple as the hydraulic clutch mechanism malfuntioning. There should be 2 cyl's. one slave and a master cyl. Common for these to leak or quit working. When they leak or lose fluid, you have no clutch.

I also forgot to tell you, i pulled a trailer friday and had gone about 40 miles and when i had slowed down for my cutoff, i smelled oil and saw a little smoke from underneath the smell was gear oil smell, not motor oil smell. i pulled over and checked the clutch fluid level and it was ok. i could still shift gears and went on down the road to pick up a donkey and then drove on back home. then for the 2nd time as i slowed down and down shifted from 5th to 4th i smelled the same oil smell. then no other problems and drove another 30 before clutch went limp sitting at a red light. i towed her home and want to repair as soon as i can. thanks again, david

Limp both ways- I would still check the hyd. system on that unit. As far as paying for a repair, maybe an individual would do it for 700 +, because you should change pressure plate, clutch plate and throw out all at one time. You can get a price for parts at any auto place or autozone. At a dealer you may get by for 70.00 an hour labor. It is not that difficult to DIY. Block engine from below(dont use a jack on the pan without a 2x6 between the jack and pan,) drop drive shaft and remove. Remove transfercase and trans. Also the linkages or shifter. And the slave cyl. Any wires that are connected. Remove bell housing and there it is. You will need a spleen alignment tool to center the clutch plate during installation. Check flywheel for damage and pilot bearing. That gear oil smell puzzles me as it seems years ago GM was using ATF in both trans. case and manual trans. I probably forgot something, been a while.

The master is still full because the cylinder isn't working. The fluid is just passing around the piston. That's my take on it.
