I broke the 1 1/8" square shaft on my disk (accidently hit a rock).
Can disk shafts be welded to hold up? I have a lincoln AC/DC welder. If so, whats the best rod to use? Whats the best amperage? How much grinding do I need to do?

I have fixed many of them with no problems I bevel all side down over half way place them in a long pice of 2x2 angel iron and clamp to keep them stright and tack weld in two places and turn and start welding i prefer 7018 for this job with a light preheat , like i said i have done many around here as we do have rocks and they do break when i am done i don"t even have to grind and never had one break yet . Had one guy that fell asleep while disken and hit a old stump sure did the number on that 470 but i fixed him up in 6 hours and he is still using that disk and that was 10 years ago and a truck load of blade later.

Hi CEB,

If this is a non rotating part then it can be repaired but if rotating then replace the shaft as it's to dangerous to repair.

V grind all four sides on both pieces at 23� leaving about 1/4" square in the center. Lay both pieces in a jig, angle iron works well, then tack weld with 6010 or 6011, then clean the tack welds very well taking care to remove all slag, then weld with 7018 at about 150a while hold a close arc. The extra heat is needed since you will only be welding short beads and do not want any cold lap (and the reason why Mig would be a poor choice). Let the shaft air cool slowly, then reheat to 500� (lead wheel weights melt close to 500�) and quinch in oil until cold (adds temper).

By now, that new shaft is looking pretty cheap at $40! LMAO

T-Bone,

Thanks for the welding advice. I decided that I will buy a new shaft as I need to finish disking soon. I am still going to weld up the old one as per your recommendations. I think I could save it as a spare if this would happen again.

I have had the same problem. I was about ready to weld it and then I called the IHC dealer, to my surprise the 1 1/8 shaft was under $40. dollars,this was on a 480 IHC disc and the shaft was about 6-7 feet long. I was surprised. Try your dealer of the type disc you have. I had a shaft brake years ago out of drag type single disc, and a blacksmith fixed it by heating both broken ends in a forge and put the two ends in a trip hammer lengthing them about 4 inches and then reheating and put some flux on them and put them in the trip hammer again, fusing them together. You could not tell where they were fused together. He was a great blacksmith. The shaft never broke while I had the disc.

I have bought several shafts at local agri supply store. They are usually in the $30 - $40 range. Will save a lot of time.

I've had a wire feed for over 15 years, so I can't help with rod numbers. But rather than grinding a lot, I normally torch the two ends into a V. Clamp it into a large angle iron to keep it straight. You need complete penetration- after all, it broke while it was complete, and any miss or slag inside will only weaken it.

You would need to do a lot of grinding on that. Sort of grind it down to a point on each end of it. Not sure if 7018 would do you or not, usto know the number for a very strong rod but haven't used it in years. Also if it where you could put a fish plate on each side it would last longer. After each past you should also chip off the slag and just keep building it up. If I had it in my shop I could probably fix you right up LOL
