Read somewhere that you can fix a carpenters square that is out of adjustment. It said to lay the square on an anvil and strike the inside corner to widen the square and strike the outside corner to cose it up some.

When you reach for one of those, it's often after you've quit talking coherently and your eyes have gotten beady. It's usually a good idea for everyone in the county to leave the county, cause there's gonna be trouble.

Tractors have been known to start themselves and drive out of the barn at that point.

If you have a vehicle which is a lemon, but does not quite qualify under the lemon law, a ball peen hammer is a useful tool to strategically place dents all over the top, hood, rear deck and fenders to simulate hail storm damage, thus allowing a bogus claim against your insurance company. Hopefully you"re good enough with the ball peen hammer to convince the Insurance co, that your vehicle should be totaled out. You might try freezing a few ice balls to substantiate your case.

We sometimes use ballpeen hammers to flatten or take the bow out of a piece of metal. If you practice a bit you can get quite good at this. Easy.

Steve TX is close, but I'm surprised that no one posted the old time use for the peen side of the hammer. To peen a scyth or a sickle is the way it's sharpened. The edge was peened many time very close together to make the edge like a serrated knife.

A ball pein hammer is used to strike other metal objects. Hardened or soft metals. Unlike a carpenters claw hammer which is only used to strike other soft metals such as a nail. Beyond this basic function then the shape of the hammer face has a lot to do with it's use.

Ballpien aka mechanic's realignment tool.

Hammer rule #1:
If you have to use a hammer, use the biggest one you can find.

Joe: To peen (also spelled pein) metal is to displace it sideways as part of a metalworking operation. Rounding over rivets (properly called "upsetting") and sharpening metal cutting dies are two uses of the technique, though there are hundreds more. There are dozens of specialized hammers available to move metal in specific fashions. The ball peen hammer is the most common, but there are many others such as the cross peen (shaped like a dull cold chisel) the square peen, and many more. The shape of the hammer and the force and direction of the hammer blows dictate how agressively and in what direction the metal is moved.

Hi Joe,

As Tim stated a ball peen is a type of forging hammer as it made from harden steel and has curved faces for metal shaping. We then found that a ball peen makes great gaskets very easy.

So why beat on the metal? To align the metal grain structure so that it's stronger and is called forging by peening with a hand or machine hammer.

Ever notice that your chisle head becomes mushroomed while using a ball peen hammer? That's because the ball peen hammer metal is harder than the chisel metal plus it displaces the metal as it is struck.

My father's first trade was metalsmith in the shipyard prior to WWII. Then he was drafted into the Navy and assigned to a repair ship. He made several bowls from copper sheet by peening with a ball pein hammer to stretch the copper in selected areas.

Mark...didn"t Carl use what he called a kaiser blade somewhere in all that mess. I call him the chameleon cause he has a different look in every movie and each movie Billy Bob Thornton plays in the girlfriend has to tell me who he is. Fred OH

Fred,

Billy Bob was in his own element when he did Slingblade..... everything else I have seen him in..he's a poor actor. I wish he had made a sequel to Slingblade and then, quit acting.

Now as for the Kaiser blade:

"There was a slingblade leanin against the back door..... like the highway boys use fer cuttin bresh and sech, some folks call'em a kaiser blade, I call'em a slingblade....anyway, I picked that up as I went in the house..... ..... .

Making gaskets - i.e., cutting holes out of gasket material by tapping against the face of the part.
