I recently acquired a swench torque multiplier made by the Curtis Wright Corp. Now the big question, how does this thing work? I need to torque the final drive sprocket nuts on a 310G crawler. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Not sure which size you got, but 1 inch has 2000 ft/lbs Max 3/4 inch one has 800 ft pounds. You set the power level by using an Allen wrench in the end of the handle. To see specs & pictures of Swench in use, Do a search of Swench or Powerhawk Technology

I have three of them, a 1/2, a 3/4 and a 1" drive models.

They are NOT torque wrenches. They are manual IMPACT wrenches that do not require any external power source, just manual labor and the spring inside the handle.

You cannot set them to a measured amount of torque.

Screwing the screw in the end of the handle in and out adjust the spring tension, hence the amount of impact effort.

One square drive tightens, one loosens. If you want to break something loose, install it so you pulling on the spring, keep pulling, it will eventually trip and impact, keep pulling and it will again trip and impact, or ratchet the handle back and pull again.

Hey Charles, for future refference the Swench can be set to a measured/specified torque and will repeat it til it's reset to something different. True you'd have to have a machine to measure the amount of torque it was putting out but once it's set it will repeat that same amount of torque over and over. I got this straight from Curtis Wright when I called them about mine several years ago. This feature allows say a pipeline crew to torque all the bolts on a flange or whatever all to the same torque. It would work basically just like those different colored extensions you see for tightening lug nuts, when the specified torque was reached it simply wouldn't turn it anymore.

Wayne, you are correct. I suppose what I should have said was that you have no practical way to set it to a specific torque, it doesn't have a torque scale on it like a torque wrench does. Like you said, it can be done however, given the right equipment.

Charles, It is amazing at what the Swenches will do. The company that is in our same building had an end cap on a molding machine that was stuck. They had spent hours with a striker wrench & sledge hammer. They came to me to see if I had any ideas. I went home got the One inch Swench & a socket. 3 or 4 clicks later, it was off....

Here is a thread that may help. Also go to "Tool Talk" board and enter Swench in the search box for additional threads.
