I just had another soil boring done on my place and the guy who did it was driving a new 6.0 Ford, he had a 7.3 the first time he was out. I asked how he liked it, said it got terrible milage... 13 mpg with 22k on it. Will trade for another brand at 50k if he can't get at least 15 mpg like the old 7.3. Another buddy has one of the early 6.0's and for the first two months it died for no apparent reason at least 4 times. No problems since that I know of, he gets 16 mpg at 60k which is down from the 18 mpg when new.

Local Fire Company bought an F-550 with a 6.0 for a brushtruck chassis. Had 32 miles on it when it started rattling. Needed a piston and a coupla valves. Dealer wouldn't say what happened. Did it again when the dealer's mechanic started the engine after repair. Another piston and valve.

Truck is finished and in service now with several hundred miles on it. Seems OK for now. Fingers are crossed. I thought that Ford & International would have had the bugs worked out of the 6.0 by now, but apparently not.

Have heard of people having problems, but I have about 22,000 on my 2004 F250 SD 6.0 PS and have not had a problem at all. Very pleased with it. Have a friend with one that has over 50,000 that he tows a 30' camper with. He also has had no problems.

Lots of idiocy, high school kids dreaming of their "ultimate" truck, want to be truck drivers, assh**es who modify their pickup, and then expect Ford to cover the damage under warranty. A prime example of the boundless STUPIDITY available on the internet.

I agree that power upgrades account for some of the problems with the 6.0L. However it doesnt count for all of the problems. The dealers and the service tech. guys will even tell you that the motor has bugs that still need worked out. In fact, my local dealer advised me to stay away from trucks with that motor because he'd see it more than I would. Either find a 7.3 or wait a little longer for the new motors to come out. (early 2007 if memory serves correct)

I have a fleet of 25 trucks at work, mostly Fords. We have 1 2003 F-350 with the 6.0 PSD. With only 24,000 miles it's been back to the dealer 5 times,it's sitting there now as I write this. Not to mention the awful groan from the turbo on decel that's "Normal for this motor". Haven't had to replace the motor but it seems that they are throwing parts at it and not suceeding. It won't shift right when cold, loses almost all power at times,stalls,etc... What a PIA as long as I have any say in the matter we won't get another one. Since then we have bought an F-350 with the v-10 gas motor and have a gas F-450 on order. Somebody gimme back the old 7.3 Powerstroke! :>(

I have heard that the new 6.0 L turbo diesels have improvements that solved many of the older problems. Ford also came out with a new auto tranny for the diesels this year, it is kind of on trial, no one knows quite yet how much better it really is. I know you can tell a 6.0L from a 7.3 by the turbo whine. The 6.0 has a much more noticeable whine. Also, I thought that ford offered a cummins option on the 550 and up? Maybe one of these days we can afford a new diesel pick up. I know my uncle just bought a newer used ford with the 6.0 diesel and he hasn't had any problems that I know of yet. How do you keep the v10 fueled?

Don't have one but I've read and heard that they are very sensitive to using the correct oil, the proper change intervals (due to the 3000 psi or so oil pressure used to push the fuel injection) and very sensitive to the proper coolant and additives (supposedly the vibration set up by the combustion can cause the coolant to "boil" or aireate to the point it will bore right thru the iron.

Sounds kinda quirky to me, but if that is what it takes..... ..

Actually, that is the case with any wet sleeved diesel engine. With the Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit, and Mercedes Benz engines used in the Frieghtliner trucks, DCA levels must be maintained in the cooling system. Otherwise, the coolant will cavitate around the cylinder sleeves and bubbles of oxygen are created. The oxygen bubbles will allow electrolisis to burn holes through the sleeves into the cylinders. I have seem it many times. It takes time, but it will and does happen.

It doesn't happen to the Cummins diesel in dodge trucks because that is what is as an automotive or "B" series engine. It doesn't have sleeves, the cylinders are bored in the block.

Cheers, chris.
