Hooking up an alternator on a DC Case

I need to hook up the alternator on my DC. It is the type with one plug in and one bolt terminal. Can someone give me a simple verbal step-by-step procedure or possibly even scan in a diagram? Somehow the alternator, battery, amp meter, and likely a switch to excite the system are the components but I don't know how to hook them up. Thanks, Glenn F.

Not sure if this would apply to you. I recently converted a 1954 Towmaster forklift to alternator. Nothing seemed to match, so I canned all the wiring and installed one of those one-wire Chevy alternators made for hotrods. Seems to work just fine, and I got rid of a big mess of a wiring harness, regulator, resistor, etc.

Here is the way I did it on my Cub, and it works great. The lighter plug leads are to allow a 12V lighter plug for assy. hook up (radio, light, etc.)

That $39.95 Napa alternator doesn't look like such a bargan while looking at a tangle mess of wires when compaired to rebuilding the generator.

Just for an alternative you can "T" a normally open oil pressure switch in the oil pressure line and switch the battery to the #2 terminal. On my VAC the oil line is just below the alternator(two feet of wire). It begins to charge when the oil comes to pressure.

If it has a starter solnoid, run a 10 or 12 ga wire from the pos battery post of the solenoid to the post on the back of the alt, connect the #2 wire of the two wire plug to the same post at the back of alt. #1 wire will go to the ign switch, by way of amp meter. this wire can only be hot when switch is in the on position. If you have an over charge, add a 10 ohm 10 watt resister inline to the #1 wire.

However you should decide to hook it up, something to watch is the steering arm rubbing on the alternator. It only does it when you turn to the extreme left or right, but mine touches. Something to think about, unless you already were aware of that.

Well if I'm wrong I guess my 3 or 4 tractors aren't working right. I have checked them and they all put out around 13-14 volts so I guess I did something wrong but it works right.

Your way will work but not properly. I went to the one week Delco alternator school when the first internal regulator model '10SI' was new, and I have been working with them ever since. If you ran the alternator all day and checked the voltage you would find it too high. Why is it so hard to attach the #2 lead to the hot post where it belongs.

Well if its a delco heres how to do it. The bolt terminal goes to the amp guage with #10 wire. Then the 2 spade connections you wire togeather and put a light or diode in line and that goes to the switch. My self I perfer the diode but others like the light bulb. You need one or the other or when you turn the switch off the tractor will keep running.

NO!

Only the #1 wire should be fed through the diode. The #2 wire needs to be jumpered over to the large output stud, or for even more accurate voltage sensing, connect it to the battery cable terminal at the starter switch.

The #2 terminal is for VOLTAGE SENSING, and feeding it through a diode would "trick" the alternator into overcharging the battery by about .6 Volts.

Bob Melville, over on the Farmall Board, has drawn up a set of diagrams for various IH 12 Volt conversions (and graciously shared them), and you should be able to find one that's useable for your Case on his photo site.

Well, the #2 terminal IS voltage sense, and feeding it through a diode will drop the sensed voltage by the stated .6 Volt (the voltage dropped across a silicon semiconductor junction), causing the regulator to compensate by increasing the alternator's output by .6 Volt.

This may not be a problem in a lightly-used machine, but on a machine that's used for lots of hours straight, battery life would likely be affected.

Go to the MAD Electrical page I previously posted, and read the section on voltage sensing, and you'll have a better understanding of how it works.

It is so simple to jumper the #2 terminal over to the output stud, and there is NO REASON to feed it through the diode.

If you will note, BobM's diagrams concur with what I am saying.
