How resistant to termites is treated lumber (latest copper(?) method). The place we built our house on is lousy with termites - every peice of wood that touches the dirt seems to be infected from stumps to hedge posts. I getting worried about the pole barn I built last year. Had a oak pallet setting on the floor that I'd piled some parts on - picked it up the lower part had been eaten up pretty good. This is in NE Kansas.

Heck, I live in a cinder block/concrete house and the termites here chew through that and through the tile grout in the floors as they travel. We have to treat all of the wooden furniture in the house and cant store anything in cardboard boxes. Any food items that come in paper have to be put in plastic containers. They even got into the wifes book rack and devoured her paperbacks and they ate into the plastic blow up toys we have for the swimming pool. Had a guy come treat the house last April and it helped, but calling him back next week. He said hed have to drill the walls and inject the chemicals, so we have to move out for a day or two.

Wished I still had that 5 gal can of 70% Chlordane!

Kip, some might think your joking, but I have a brick building with a concrete floor that was my shop building, no wood except in the roof. It even has a metal ceiling, [30's building] Someone left one of my 50's Motors manuals on the floor,[Grandkids] or was knocked off the desk. It was on a very small crack in the concrete floor. When I noticed it and picked it up, all the pages dropped out, or what was left of them did. It was full of termites. This was the first Motors manual that I bought as youngster, sure did hurt for a minute.

I hear you. These things borrow through the cinder blocks, plaster and grout! Theyll even come up a wall behind curtains and eat up the curtains. My wife is about to have a fit. Guess thats one of the pleasures of living in Mexico.

The new treatments are just that, new. There's no long term experience with them by end users. The various manufacturers are all claiming they work superbly with termites, but we'll all just have to wait and see.

Ortho's Ortho-Klor is apparently still available as a consumer ground treatment. I need it myself. I'm in KCKs; termites and poison ivy are my best crops....

If it was treated to .60 it won't get ate, but if it was .40 they may get into it in time. That goes for all treated lumber.

Around here all post are treated to .60 and all flat lumber is treated to .40, There's a tag on the end of the PT to tell you how much treat it has. It's probable the same where you are.

Pound for pound there are more termites in the world than humans. We can fight em, but we can't win.

I once read that the largest source of pollution in the world is methane from termite flatuence..... I guess that high-fiber diet gives them gas.

I have that problem also here in Texas, and I don't know about the treated lumber. But don't take a chance, spray for them suckers. I get Termite stuff at Home Depot, someone else may have more powerful poison, but so far, their has worked for me.

We've got 'em bad here too.
I stuck a piece of 1x2 (treated) under a piece of concrete block to level it to put my rake jack on when I park it. I know it has been in the same place for a good 5 years right on bare ground. I moved it all yesterday because I cut some trees and brush to re-arrange my equipment.
There was no termite damage at all to the piece of treated wood. I've been told by people that they use arsenic in the treatment process, but cannot confirm that!

Thats the problem, the older stuff was treated with an extremely leathal blend of chemicals but the newer stuff is supposed to be less harmful.

I do have an old can of Chloridine that I treated the house with while it was being built, looks like I'll have to break it out again.

What shocked me is when they lit into some hedge posts that were laying outside - half the weight of one is gone - felt like rotten cotton wood when I picked it up, had been cut fro mthe tree in May of 2004.

Chloridine, huh?
That's GOOD stuff. Better hang on to it (which I'm sure you already know!!!)
That's the problem now with all chemicals; herbicide, pesticide, etc. - if it works, they take it off the market!!
