Question about Sheet metal.

hey guys, how does one messure what gauge a piece of sheet metal is? I have a old walk behind lawnmower and I need new metal for it, its fairly thick, I think it may be 10 gauge or 14 gauge dont know how to messure it.

Those decks are thinner than you might imagine. Probably not more than 18 gauge. A 10 gauge deck would be one heavy mower to push.

Certain sizes like 10 are no longer popular.By that I mean unless you are a company willing to orderm alot from a mill.I sent the wife for some 10 and 9 gauge for frame tabs on a Harley restoration and this is what a well stocked supply house told her anyway.Sometimes countermen talk nonsense but I had no choice but to machine down 3/16" to the .149" or whatever the right gauge was.I could be wrong.Maybe a metal supply guy will come on and tell.Besides its only a mower slap the nearest close size on there.

Hey Doc,
We do some fabrication at work from time to time... use a variety of sheet or plate... mild steel. Depending on the size job we're doing, we buy full sheets from our regular metal supplier -or- if we're just doing a small job, we buy bits & pieces from a local fabrication shop. They are more than happy to sell in ANY quantity and will shear to our specs. As far as I know, all sizes & guages are still in production and are available!

Hi DS,

In a typical SM shop they will stock galvanized, black, CR and SS flat sheets, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, gauge. That's what most building codes reconize as standard thickness size for the commerical HVAC industry.

Twisted or flat expanded metal, then 9, 11 and 14 gauge.

Not saying you can't get other gauges, but what's popular stocked. This hasn't changed in many moons.

Thanks DL and T-Bone.Wife went to a supply house that specializes in truck and trailer parts[round corners,alum,diamond plate,etc].I called a building oriented place called Passaic Metal Products and they have these gauges.Not trying to hijack your thread Jay just wanted to thank guys for the info.Saves me alot of trouble.

Hi Jay,

There's a B&S sheetmetal/wire gauge for about $20 at most hardware stores, that measures SM thickness as well as wire diameters.

There round with slots for SM gauging on the edge and holes for wire gauges in the center.
