Miller Thunderbolt welder

We have one of these given to us and today was really the first time I did some serious welding. Anyways I noticed today that as I welded the variable tap would back off on its own and all the sudden I would not have enough current to make a good weld and would begin sticking. I finally stuck a block of wood under the tap handle and that seemed to work, however, I am wondering is there something easy to fix inside this thing to correct the problem?

On my old Thunderbolt, I always make a point to crank it down below the amps I want, then wind it up to the right point. That seems to keep it pretty consistant. It makes quite a bit of difference on mine going up or going down.

I have a Hobart AC/DC welder which also has a sliding shunt block inside the welder for amperage control. The manual shows an anti-noise adjustment which looks as if it increases pressure on the shunt block which should also keep it from sliding out so easily. It looks like the hardest thing about it might be getting the cover off the machine.

I've heard that the problem you're having is the one major tradeoff for the advantage of having infinite adjustment control rather than fixed settings. Supposedly, fixed settings will sometimes leave you having to weld either a little too hot or a little too cold, but they don't slip out of the chosen setting.

But hey, how bad is a free welder?
