I wonder if this place is unique or is it being done all over the country.. I live near Mountain Home Ar. and the population is just over 10,000 it is hard to believe but in this small town there are a total of 33 banks and branches..and more to come..some banks have 4-5 branches in the same town.. I would much prefer that they give me a better interest rate than to put up another branch (for my convenience).

Guys, Banks do have to pay for the brick and morter and keep the light on and pay salraies to employees also.
There are better intrest rates to be had If you just do a little looking.

As most Of you Know I am an Ins Agent here in Texas.

Say you want to save $100/month.....

One one my Ins Conpanies has a Life product with a side fund that is currently @ 6.5% ! ! ! , has a 4% base guarentee. never been lower than Its current rate. 30 ave of + - 10%. in 20 yrs you have 30k in CLEAN cash. That is based of the guarentee rate. At a 6.5% ave it will be a whole lot more. Even at your bank rate or the one quoted below the 4% guarentted rate still beats that one.
AS I said there are better rates to be had out there you just need to do a littl looking.
Later,
John A

You're right about interest rates vs. buildings. Just check out some of the internet banks, and compare the interest rates they pay vs. what your hometown bank is offering. Example: 3.15% on a internet Money Market account...just goes to show who is paying for all the new brick and mortar branches.

I never really thought about it till now, but within fifteen miles of me there are probably twice as many banks as there are gas stations! I guess with the gas (and diesel) prices the way they are, the banks are there to service the gas station owners.

Hi Carol,

Doesn't make any sense to me! I work in banking and am somewhat familiar with the usury laws in Arkansas. Fact is, the usury law is so unfriendly to banks in Arkansas, most choose to set up outside of the state and write loans from the "out of state bank".

I've heard many nice things about Mountain Home, maybe the banking execs are just looking for a nice place to vacation and get a tax deduction in the process? : )

here (Tecumseh Nebraska), we have three banks and a S&L that just became a Federal Bank (what ever that means). Ever notice that when they put up a new bank who finances it? You'll see signs like "COMING SOON - STEAL YOUR MONEY STATE BANK" AND RIGHT UNDERNEATH - "PROJECT FINANCED BY MEGA NATIONAL BANK". You figure that if they were going to build another bank, they'd at least fund it themselves ..... ..

I was told that Federal Banks are Federal Insured and State Banks are insured by the State they are in. Don`t know which is the most reliable to cover the funds in a failure since both Insurers are about broke. LOL

My Uncle knew a guy that was a Fireman for Missouri Pacfic, he said he told him he would shovel 15 ton of coal between Yellville and Crane, Mo. That make me tired just thinking about it.

I live in a town of 19,000. There are 3 branches. That's it. 33...betcha it's a IRS tax thing. Not possible for all of them to be cost efficient.

We have the opposite problem here... banks keep merging, then closing half of the branches. I did have a bank 3 miles away, now it is 10 to one branch, or 6 (in heavy traffic) to another.

I can't see how there staying in biz tho. My son is going to refianance his home with 1.25% lower interest for 15yrs. Total of refianancing cost, $75, for everything!

I told him there's gots to be a gotcha somewhere in fine print.
