Hi Nathan, As along as you remove the residual refrigerant pressure before cutting, open the valve or knock off the valve, as most refrigerant is not explosive, but read the lables, as some of the rare refigerant gases are explosive. R-12, R-134A, R-22, R500, R502 would be the safest. As far as what they will do to plants is another story. When I was a pup just starting my SheetMetal(SM) apprenticeship, the wife had beautiful plants so I made her a bunch of planters out of galvanized SM and within a short time all her plants were dead because of the off gas(zinc oxide) of the galvanized SM mixed with water. All refrigerants are chemical mixtures and there will be residual refrigerant left in the steel of the tanks. I would say to boil them with water "outside" before using with plants. I would "not" use any refrigereant tanks as a Bar-B-Q grill. You can buy "new" 35gal steel drums for about $35, and thats what I would use. Freon is a refrigerant tradename used by the Dupont Company. Dupont designs refrigerants then sells the chemical "use license" mixture to other companys to produce. Gee I wonder why! So Dupont can't be sued. Stay away from a common refrigerant R-11 as the lable says totally safe and non harmful, but when I would splill liquid R-11 on my hands, I would have a instant headache for several days. T_Bone
