OT, SKUNKS- Getting rid of them.

What do you do when they take residence under a large shed near your house? Leaving them there is not an option. Dispatching them is fine with me. But how can I get them out to do so?

My neighbor leaves cat food out in his barn 24-7 for his 11 cats. So far this summer he has shot 7 skunks with his 30-30. Not much left of the skunks after that and the smell hasn`t left his place since spring. Guess the smell doesn`t bother him or his wife. I don`t know if he has figured out why the skunks keep going to his place.

Used to have a skunk problem all over the neighborhood. Some foxes moved in and now we havn't even smelled a skunk in several years.
The foxes also control rodents and snakes too.

About 15 years ago, I lived in a double-wide in the country. A skunk took up residence under there, and "blew" one night. I left one end of the skirting open, and put a loud radio under the other end, thinking it would leave. The next day, I talked to a friend who worked for a cleaning company (fire and smoke damage, etc.). He said they had dealt with skunks and their smell, and his recommendation was to get in the crawl space with a pump-up garden sprayer with a strong mixture of chlorine bleach, and spray everything down. He said that would help with the smell, and likely get the skunk to move on.

I was on my belly, doing that, when I sqeezed around some cement blocks, and came face-to-face with the #&%$ critter. You would not believe a tall fat man could get out of a tight place so quickly!

After a while, I took a couple more access covers off, and resumed squirting the strong bleach solution under there. After a little while, the skunk apparently got tired of the bleach smell, came out the original door I'd left open, only to have a friend (of mine) blow his little head off.

The bleach did seem to help with the smell, and I never had another skunk dig under there, after that.

Although skunks are not usually rabid, they do tend to carry rabies. If you catch or trap one, many states will not allow you to relocate them peacefully into some other area for that reason, so cover the cage, take it out and either "drown them or shoot them" was is writing from the State of Illinois when I owned a home there. As far as Indiana goes, I haven't had a problem yet, but figure would/will do the same if it happens. My bigger problem is pumas. Have a couple in the area. I've tracked one along one of my fence lines, but has been months. A couple of days ago, some folks saw one of them just down south of me. Michigan DNR released 3 of them in the general area to keep down the deer population, and they maintain 50 mile radius's. I'm sure they're microchipped, so gotta be careful when... Maybe is why have no skunks.

#4 or larger Conibear trap set over the entrance hole if they have made a neat hole to the area below the shed. Trap breaks thier back and kills them on tripping and no smell. Be careful setting these type of traps and watch your fingers as anything that breaks a skunks back will break you as well. The trap must be set so the skunk will try to walk through it when they leave or enter the den.

Note anytime you use the suggested baits be prepared to catch every cat in the country side first so don't use bait with a the conibear method.

Had a problem with rabies in the skunks at my parents place and took out 15 skunks over a couple of weeks, from under various sheds and bins with the above method.

We have 3 or 4 regulars that come around the bulk receiving area at the petfood plant I work at. I just tell everyone to leave them alone and avoid startling movement. It's hilarious, the gal that receives trucks in on 2nd shift (my shift) is an animal person. more that a few nights I've gone out to bulk receiving and saw her feeding pieces of peanut butter and jelly sandwich to the skunks while the big tough truck driver won't get out of his truck. Drivers don't give her any guff. LoL

Use a live trap, and if you have more than one skunk, dig a hole upwind of shed, with hand posthole digger 5-6 inches deep, open a can of sardines and make yourself a sanitch, what's left put in the hole can and all. Set the trap over the hole, with sardines under the trap trigger. The skunks will dream about them sardines all day long. You can catch all your skunks, one a night, with the same sardines.{sardines will keep as well in the hole as they do in the can} Dispatch with 22 between the eyes before removing from trap. Some will tell you that you can't do this without the skunk put'n his or her mark on you, you just have to be smarter than the skunk. If you have Dogs? put em up at nite while doing skunk removal duties, never let a dog tag along while in skunk dispatch mode. Dogs will already have the skunk pi$$ed off before you get the chance to dispatch him. I have shot many a skunk this way, and they have all faced me. only had one turn his back on me because of the Dogs. And make sure the 22 is dead on at 6 foot, or whatever you feel comfortable with before you start skunk removal. Shotguns are very messy, and cause a really bad stink, also hard on traps.

Just to add,if your going to shoot them,use 22 short,as anything more powerfull tends to go through the skunk and blow the bars off your expensive live trap.

We had some get under the grand parents house a number of years ago. since they are nocturnal, we placed lights under the house and they decided to move on without any fuss.

skunk questions are hilarious as long as somebody else has the actual skunks - check archives for last summers postings

medium sized havahart trap with doors that will open when trap is rolled upside down - do NOT use spring loaded doors - infestation might require multiple traps

bait with peanut butter and set trap along their path leaving room to toss blanket over trap after skunk is inside - hardly ever get one during the day

after you have the critter SLOWLY drape blanket over trap and carry trap to suitable disposal area - if skunk stamps his feet or hisses, back off

all in all - they are not bad creatures

Get some old rotten meat you lay it out a ways in front of where they go in and then shot them when they come out. Problem is they like to be out after dark

Thanks for the ideas guys. All are good. This will take some careful planning as once one of these critters sprays its gonna be a long time before the stink dissapates. Ask me how I know. LOL

I know this is a little off the discussion, but if by chance you(and or pets) end up being sprayed by a skunk I"ve had excellent luck using a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dawn dish soap to get rid of the smell. Works well on dogs and thankfully I haven"t had to try it on humans but I have a feeling it would work about as good.

A friend's wife told me to use Masengil and vinegar. I didn't argue with her. But felt kind've out of place at the drugstore trying to find it, and when I did, bought a bunch of it because never wanted to have to buy it again. Then the stupid skunk never came back, and after about a year, pitched it.

Once my lab got it point blank in the face (before I cornered the market in Masengil). The smell was beyond skunk. Took a couple of days to lower to the level of skunk. Was bad. He's had a teary eye on that side of his face ever since. Same happened to my neighbor's dog and he pointed out it's teary eye ever since, and after thinking about it, yep, my lab's eye did start right after that. Hmm.
