I've heard of people building pitcher pumps with some wood and a piece of rubber tire tube. Has anyone ever done this?? How well does it work?? Thanks!!

I always wondered how they made a pitcher pump so that the seat in it held up for years and years without leaking so much that it wouldn"t prime. A couple of years ago I had to take an old one apart to fix something and I found out why....the seat was a glass ring...and they don"t wear or corrode. If you"re gonna make one from scratch, I would go to an old time hardware store till you find that part and the flapper valve (leather) and then start building the pump. Probably the Lehman"s mail order place that caters to the Amish people would be a good place if you can"t find it locally. Fred OH

Unless you want a project I would just buy one. I bought one of these and it works fine.

I got one of the HF pumps sittin atop a 55 gallon drum fulla water in my wife's greenhouse. Been workin' good for 3 years now, and other than a little rust on the bolts it looks good as new. Not bad for 13 bucks.
