I've got a harbor freight 4X6 bandsaw that is giving me problems. Used it the other day and was making a click sound from driven pulley. Took blade off and pulley turned free and nice. Noticed gearbox was hot and motor was real hot. Couldn't even touch it. When saw was running noticed it would jump a bit every so often. Like when the blade would hit a certain spot. Blade seemed to look OK. I was cutting 2X2 angle 1/4 inch mild steel. Any thoughts? Thanks for help.

Thanks for info everyone. I checked gear box and teeth look OK. I will drain and refill with clean oil. I know motor looks cheap. I wanted to buy a USA 4X6 but every catalogue and store I stopped at had only import. As is the case with 95% of everything found on store shelves these days.

I've had My 4" x 6" saw for over 25 yrs. and I bought it used. Buy GOOD blades, They're worth the $$$$$. I don't use Mine much but I use it hard when I use it. My next one IS going to be bigger, 5" x 7" or bigger..... to see if I can get a US built one! Your jumping problen definetly sounds like broken teeth in the blade.

I've had mine for about four years. I also cleaned the gear box and replaced the gear oil when I got it. The original 1 HP sealed motor always ran hot, you couldn't touch it after 10 minutes of cutting. A couple of months ago I walked away while cutting, depending on the auto shut off to stop it. The blade jammed in the cut, stopping the motor. By the time I returned 3 or 4 minutes later, the start winding was smoking and fried good. There is NO thermal shut off on these motors. I had no spare motor, so I used it by giving the pulleys a spin by hand to start. I later found a large old sealed 1/3HP 1750 rpm motor which I adapted to fit the mounting. It barely gets warm with extended cutting. For the jumping problem, check the blade for a missing tooth or two especially if your using 14 tooth blades. I suspect your machine has fixed blade guides, which may be good. Mine has adjustable guides, but they were so crude that I modified one so it can be adjusted by turning a screw. I'm also modifiying the vertical table to use 1/4" blades for cutting small circles.

From your description, sounds like you may have a bad gear, maybe part of one has sheared. That may be what is causing the skipping.

So what do you expect from HF.It came from china so why not complain to them. My advice is to contact HF and see what they will do. Depending on how long you have owned it,HF will replace it free. They know what they sell is junk . Take for instance,it you paid about $200 for the band saw, they paid about $15 from the foreign dealer. So they can afford to replace it. If it's an old band saw and it works just put up with the noise and invest in a good one. As far as your knocking problem I don't know. Probably out of balance and that will take more time and money than it's worth.

Thanks. I'll pull the gear cover off and see. The saw is only about 6 months old but I know I don't have the receipt anymore. I bought it at their Youngstown store.

When I bought mine I was advised to dump the lube from the gearbox, flush & replace with good 90# gear oil. I took the cover off then tipped it to drain & the residue left was very gritty, (sand from casting) they don"t clean it after machining! Left in it wears gears quickly!
