Last Nov. I purchased a 1983 built home. The issue is on the north side of the house, it smells like something dead. The smell area is about 40/50 feet from the house and has white pine trees and some scrubs. I have looked without finding the scorce of smell. I have even got down on my hands and neighs looking/sniffing for the scorce of smell on several occations. I have even came home and had buzzard sitting in the yard. At first I figured the seller buried a dog or ? in the area, but I have asked and he tells me he didn't know of any thing being buried. It was his dad's and he passed on. Then I though I'll just wait it out and it will go away. But now its been months and it's just as strong today as it was in Nov. My question is. Can a combination of trees and scrubes and flowers create this smell? I think my answer is no, but peeuuuuuie it stinks. I have noticed that if I wet the area the smell is less. Thanks for any help given. j.ray @ his stinkie home.

A few years ago I brought in some juniper/cedar type greenery for Christmas decorations. Later the same day I carried the branches back out. I'm not sure of the species but it sure smelled like a dead animal.

It's a prehistoric asian tree, semi-common in landscapes, but the fruit stinks.

Got the same smell in an area where I have pine trees. I think it is the decaying layer of pine needles but I haven't gone in there and cleaned them out. You are right, sometimes it gets unbearable on hot humid days and does smell like a dead decaying chunk of meat. Would be nice if the lime scattered over the needle thatch would take care of the problem.

It could be a dead dog that was only buried 6 inches deep or so. You may have to get a load of dirt and bring the grade up if you cant find a dead animal in a tree.

Call the Sheriff, tell him that you think someone dumped a body in the woods, when the Posse and the dogs get though with the search, one of them should be able to point out the stink. Just remember, you will be the suspect untill the cause is found.

Are the trees all healthy? A diseased tree can give off an offensive odor. Are any of the trees hollow? Might have a dead racoon?

All of the pines are in good shape. none are bigger than ten inchs in diameter. Thier is however one smaller onimental that don't look good and is half dead. Its about two inches in diametr and 6 feet tall. None of the trees are hollow and I can't see anything dead in them.

If that one half dead bush is a Viburnam bush it could be the dead leaves. Have a lot of them growing wild in this area and the dead leaves smell like a dead animal.

My dad had some variety of ash tree between him and his neighbor that smelled real bad, kinda like something died, so yes, plants can create a real stink. Maybe the old feller planted them and had a poor sense of smell and it didn't bother him. You'd think his son would have noticed though. Might check and see where the old man was buried...

I thought I had a answer for you but you thru me for a loop with wetting the area down. If that is the case I would recommend barn lime.

My first thought was that the vent stack on your roof might not be high enough and you are getting sewer gas blowing down amongst the trees. This would come and go depending on wind strength/direction.

I have seen some old septic systems with a vent on the ground. Could you have one hidden in the trees. Or perhaps an old drywell that is venting?

Thats scarey. As a thought it is not an old septic tank maybe? Now if you did see a buzzard, I would get suspicious. Maybe you got some dead critters in the tree.

The septic system is on the other side of the house. And it is the orignal. Yes we had one big buzzard. It was only their one time and I can't find anything in the trees. thanks jray

Just an idea for you, spread some lime on the area, some times that will help brake down what ever is causeing the problem

Is the lime a one time thing? How long does it take for the smell to go away. This is what baffles me. I would have though by now it would be gone. Last night was a good example. It had rained and when I go home I could not smell anything. Two hours later I went out to mowe and it knocked me off the mower. jray

You may have to do it a few times but most of the time it will work but may take some time to kill it all.

Have you spent some time looking UP into the trees? When I was in highschool a kid shot a procupine in a tree by the road and you could smell it for a mile! It hung there for a long time until somebody cut the tree down.

I have a question. Do dogs re-act to this smell at all? I can't imagine a bad animal smell that wouldn't peak a dog's interest.
