Portable genrator/Welder Followup

I appreciate everyones responses. Little more information about the situation and hopefully more comments in addition to the ones I received already. I currently own the welder and use it my shop. Have 3 different farms I run to and only the Homeplace has electricity. I have the infrequent need to do field repairs. Neighbor has offered to exchange his 5500 watt Generac generator (8500 watt surge rating)for baling his hay. The unit has a 30 amp 240 volt plug in it. I was going to make a pigtail to allow the welder to be run off the generator. I will not run the welder at full amperage or for long periods when hooked to the generator. Would this work? Thanks again for the advice already given and any to follow.

I've got that same generator (5500w Generac) and a Lincoln welder. I haven't used it on the generator a lot, but I have used it some at 90amps and it works fine. At 120amps, the generator can't really keep up too well but at 90 or less it does just fine. I used it for most of a day working on a corral and it was fine, I never took it out of the back of the truck.

I really don't think it will do much welding if any with that small of a generator hooked to a AC welder let alone a AC/DC unit. It might do some very light welding at the least. We use to have a 12,000 watt Winco PTO generator on a 60 HP tractor and it barely had enough to run my 250 amp Century AC welder at 110-120 amps welding on fence posts and corrals on a 60 amp plug. Had another generator the same size with a Wisconsin 35 HP motor and it was not really enough to pull the generator for constant welding and only good for small jobs. That was my experience.

Let me start by saying that I've never welded, but I've been researching to buy my first welder and you might want to check out this link on the Lincoln site:

Basically states that while, mathematically, a generator that size should work, the transformer in the Lincoln welder (and I assume most) is not efficient and will cause the electrod to be hard to strike and cause frequent sticking. It also states that if you get an arc it will pop out frequently. The low heat will also cause a poor weld.

I tried welding with our pto gererac running the welder.I think that is what ruined the voltage regulator.Some models may have better built style of regulators than others.

Been watching this discussion cause of interest to me too. I think the only way to know for sure if it will work to your satisfaction is to try it. One generator might work where another would not. I have run a welder on 30 amp circuit many time. Not the best, but it works as long as you don't set too high. Bet he won't mind you trying it. There were times when I needed such a setup.

It might, I know my buzz box calls for a 50amp breaker so it would probably work the welder but not as well as it should. Biggest problem I would see is not enough amps and that could cause the welder to over heat. Also some of the generators don't have a true sine wave and that can cause problems also.
