I am looking to purchase a compound miter saw for home use and was wondering what brand people like the best and why. I have been to Lowe's and Home Depot to look at what they carry (Delta,DeWalt,Milwaukee, etc.) and I am not sure of any certain brand. Does anybody recommend the compound sliding saws? I do not have a radial arm saw or table saw as of yet. Any opinions will be appreciated.
Thanks!

Craig

Hi,
I have an Hatachi compound miter saw. 8 1/2" with a forrest blade. It is one of the finest machines available. One of my best tools.

I agree with the last two post. If you don't have any saw at home , then I would seriously consider a nice table saw. Not a cheep one. For stationary work , I would recommend a good powerfull belt driven contractors saw. The direct drive is to cheep. The cabinet makers saw(3 belts inside) is most likely more than you need. If I were to buy another table saw for myself , it would be the bench top Royobi. It is light enough to be portable , yet offered more power , weight , features than any of the other portables. The bench top table saws are all direct drive. For doing the type of work I do for a living , the portable saw is the way to go. My shop is very versitile. I do many different jobs in it. I find my table saw is always in the way. I'm always moving it. If I had a bench top saw , it would be up on a shelf , out of the way

I have a 12" Dewalt sliding miter saw and it is very good. I used it for furniture work,But it will be good for construction work also. I have other Dewalt tools and they are all good. Jerry

I would look into a table saw a nice 10 in.
you can do a lot off work with a table saw
witch you cant do with a miter saw.

I'm 100% with you on this one. Not that there's anything wrong with a mitre saw (they have certain advantages over anything else) but if you are going to spend some hard-earned dollars on your first saw, get a table saw - even a decent used one is often a great bargain. You can do almost anything on a table saw, but all the others have serious limitations.

I wouldn't get the 10" again if I had the choice. It does great work on smaller things but labors on some of the bigger stuff. While I know that some of my problem is abuse, I've never been really pleased with the accuracy of the cut I've gotten out of that little saw. A bigger one (12") would have fit my needs better but I was being cheap at the time. Also the adjustments on mine aren't too operator friendly. It is important to note that I bought the CHEAPEST one they had. When this one dies, I'll be seriously looking at a 12" DeWalt.

Everybody has there own preference of course. I looked at a lot of saws and settled on a 12 inch Delta for my choice. It is a bit cheaper than some others, but I liked the features on it. I like this saw for the way it cuts heavy and light material.I have some DeWalt tools and they're fine tools also. Have fun with which ever one you decide on.

Take a look at the Delta 12" Compound Miter Saw. I have had mine for about 2 years now and it has been flawless. The horizontal angle adjustment is very user friendly and it comes set up for easily making a work stand out of 2X4's. Home Depot handles it, along with a bunch of other brands.

I have a DeWalt, and am well satisfied, as I have been with all my DeWalt tools.

The only advantage to a sliding CM that I'm aware of is increased capacity width-wise, for which you pay quite a lot extra. My 14" DeWalt (non-sliding) will cut a 1x8 in one cut.

I have done everything from trimming 2x6 studs to length to mitering crown moulding to trim out a room with it. Accuracy, repeatability and power are good, price was resonable at Home Depot.

Thanks for the info. I don't think I have seen a 14" saw. The ones I looked at were either 10 or 12 inches. Thanks again F14!

I'm pretty sure mine is 14", but I might be thinking of my chop saw. I'll have to check on that now that you mention it.
