My house is a 1972 model with masonite siding.Starting to get bad in spots. I am thinking about taking it off and replacing it with "WHAT".Vinyl, Steel, Cement board? Other than drywall ,what do you recommend for the garage ceiling. Thanks for any help you can give. I live in east central Illinois. Earl

If you use drywall on the garage ceiling use nothing less than 5/8" or it will bow down between the trusses.

If your siding has faded, then you might be able to get new siding for free. Ours faded, but I think it was a warrenty job.

I'm in the middle of a siding job right now. I'm having a contractor do it because our old house is high and the contractor has the right tools to work safely up there.
I went with premium vinyl siding over tyvek and 3/4" super tuff R (foil faced ployiscocyanurate) foam board (r=5.3). We used Alside Charter Oak. This is over the old clapboard siding.

I checked out cement board but it required stripping off the old siding, caulking, painting, stainless nails and is much heavier. It will also need to be repainted at some point down the road when I'm at the age where I'd rather be fishing. It is also more expensive as is wood.

I think you get more performance for the buck with vinyl if you don't mind the fact that it is vinyl.

I would also recommend a good quality vinyl over housewrap. I would add whatever thickness you can without building out around the windows, etc. so much that you can"t trim out these areas with the "J" channel. Note that "J" comes in a couple of sizes; 3/4", 1/2", 5/8".

On the garage ceiling. I think that you would be wise to install 5/8" (or at least 1/2") drywall and tape the joints and screws. Drywall is an excellent firewall material which should also seperate the house and garage, if attached. In some shops that I have built, I installed white painted steel for ceiling as well, which is a nice, water resistant finished product.

Best of luck with the projects.

Put on a good quality vinyl siding. I like Certainteed Mainstreet, but not their cheaper stuff. Go watch or help someone who is installing it for a day or two. It isn"t rocket science and you can learn the tricks quickly. You DO NOT nail the stuff on solid, thats where the problems come in. As others have said, use a good house wrap and 1/2 inch insulation board, not the 1/4 inch stuff. You should be able to put in on right over you old siding unless you have moisture or other rot problems. I"d consider metal for the garage ceiling, as well as the house roof if you need to do that too.

What about good old fashioned wood? Shingles or clapboard last forever if properly maintained. No one wants to work these days, and heaven forbid you have to do any annual maintenance, but the real McCoy sure looks a lot nicer and is a renewable resource to boot.

Cement shingles are another way to go - look much better than vinyl and should last a while. It is a relatively new product so who knows how it will wear over time.

My opinion.

Can't beat vinyl for cost ease of install, cleaning and replacment. Use a good quality House Wrap (Tyvek or similar). The 1/4" thick sheets of foam don't do much good. The cost out weighs the benefits. Calculate how many "square" you need (10'x 10' like singles) and figure how much starter and other trim pieces you need, and get some prices. You can probably do it yourself for about 1/4 of what Sears and others will charge. You don't have to remove the old siding (unless you WANT to). As for ceiling - 1/4" ply , tin, or drywall works well. I did part of mine in the old 18" x 30" "foam" ceiling tiles, but only because I got them free.

For what it is worth, seems some time ago there was a thing on masonite siding, depending on year and make. Evidently some $ was paid out, so you might do a little research on this. I did and I fell between the cracks. So, I used a top quality wrap and then the better vinyl siding. One grade under the #1 stuff. Contractor said there was not enuff difference between the No. 1 and next grade down. Paid 48$ a square. So I did research and seemed that this was the general opinions on the siding. Went with the grade under No. 1. As far as ceilings I have 1/4" OSB in both garage ceilings. Dont recollect what the wrap cost me, but a little more than the average bundles. I'd stay away from colors.

I'd go with vinyl with the 1/4 inch house wrap under that. Vinyl if you get a good brand will out last you and the wrap gives you a little more R factor also. As far as the ceiling I'd go with sheet metal if you also use it as a shop. or maybe 1/4 inch plywood.

Vinyl can be finicky. If not installed perfectly (and even then sometimes) it really expend and contracts with the weather. If installed on a hot summer day you might have gaps in the winter. If installed in the spring or fall, you'll have waves down the side of the house come July. I did some one type that won't have that problem. It is vinyl siding molded in the shape of cedar shingles. Since they are not molded flat you won't notice any of the waves or gaps you might get. Aluminum siding is more expensive and a little more maintenance than vinyl, but less problematic.

The trick to vinyl is to "hang" it not nail it. Keep the nails loose enough to allow it to move and keep space between the ends so it can expand, both for other pieces and doors and windows.

Generally - if you go with a "better" grade of vinyl, and install it correctly, the problems are minimal. Metal siding (at least around here) is VERY costly, harder to install, a royal pain in the *** to replace a damaged piece, and has heat tranfer issues. Just remember to not nail vinyl tight, it has to be able to move a bit so you won't have the "ripples" and "waves".

No matter what grade of vinyl siding go with, if do go with vinyl siding, is do not put it on tight. That's what causes the waves as it expands in the heat. Need to keep them screws, nails, staples off of it 1/16" to 1/8". Vinyl siding needs to float. Do not go tight against the house. As far as Old's idea about metal roofing, I used to own a house in Romeoville, IL. Was common practice when they built them houses back in the late '50's that they used metal roofing. Most had been changed out, but some still had it when I sold, and was in almost as good shape as the day installed. A little noisy in the rain though, but very low maintenance if any at all. Have it on my barns and tool sheds. I used to build fiber glass boats in the late '70's and once thought why not layup glass and gelcoat the whole danged one piece thing so never have to repair in a million years. Then I thought of strong winds or tornados and envisioned my roof lying 3 counties over on top of someone and getting sued - wonder if could work though.

Yeah - I've installed siding on dozens of homes. There is a HUGE difference in grades of siding, but it needs to be installed correct. I'm not a fan of tin or metal roofs for a house, on a shed or barn they're great. Metal does not breathe like wood/shingles and - if you're not careful - causes damage you cannot even see until it's to late. Metal has maintenence issues also - fasteners leaking, especially. Nails work loose, rubber gromets on screws deteriorate, etc. My wife's dad has a metal roof on his house and accually got mad when I told him I wasn't going to put one on our house. His has been on for 30 years. He pushed the "low maintence" thing. In the 14 years I've known him, he has been on his roof at least twice a year with a bucket of tar - the only time I've had to repair mine was due to his son not putting tar paper down when he shingled my new laundry room. You may have better luck, but I've never seen a tin roof that didn't leak somewhere! Dad had a fiberglass roof (about 10x10) on an open porch back in the 70's. The thing was durable - we picked it up of of the ground at least 5-6 times. It'd land about 100 yards from the house! Finally just left it of and took down the supports.

Ha Ha Ha Ha. I guess there's my answer, fiber glass is supposed to scoot across the water, not the neighbor's yard. LOL.

I put the good Certainteed stuff on my old farm house 5 years ago over house wrap. Did the job myself, took all fall, but I saved over $10,000. Ended up costing about $4000 and this is for a big old two story house that on one side is over 30 feet tall. I bought a set of pump jacks, build a platform out of 2x4's and 3/4" plywood for less than $100 and went to work.
