wierd eight sided hub bolt

I finally got an air wrench so I can fix my car brakes and now I got these unusual bolts that I can not get out. They are rusty but appear to eight sided and slightly concave on each side. The heads are about 7/16. I cut some out but am concerned about frying the wheel bearings. They are too hard to drill for an extractor. Any suggestions on what they might be and what I need to turn them would be appreciated.

Sounds like they might be Torx head bolts. They make sockets for them. Go to an auto parts place and look on the special tools boards for a set of black sockets with those funny looking broaching in them.

Torx is rounded in the bottom of the flutes as you describe.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I did find a
picture of a torx bolt and sockets online:

Mine seem to be partially stripped, almost round.

If you have the room, take a standard hex nut that will almost fit over the head of your strange bolt. Drive it on and weld it to the bolt. It will let you get a good grip and, if you do it while the bolt is still warm,it will be a touch longer and easier to break free. I had to do that to several bolts holding the hubs on in the Suburban recently

Got them out now. I bought a set of Craftsman bolt-outs and they worked great with the impact wrench. They fit over the bolt head and grip it with spiraled ridges. Thanks for the tip.
