Are the ones from Harbor Freight and the like, any good for home use? Will the dies hold up? One model says verticle and one says vert/horizontal. The only difference I see is the springs to pull the ram back in. Can the springs be added to the verticle type? I guess this is related to my previous post.

Thanks, Nathan

Hi Nathan, I have a harbor frieght pipe bender and it does ok for up to 3/4 inch black pipe, but larger than that it just kinks and folds, especially exhaust pipe. I've tried the dies in all posistions to see if that was the problem and it didnt help. Maybe there is still another trick I havn't figured out yet to making them bend properly but I have given up on mine. j

The application that you reference requires an internal mandrell to avoid the collapsing. We occasional users do as the other post suggest an use sand.

Ironhead- The benders are pipe benders. You know, black iron and galvanized. They aren't designed to bend tubing-but if you pack it full of sand and try it again, you might have better results. L8R-Fred OH

Yea I figured it wasn't meant for tubing, but it kinks the black pipe as well. Would you suggest packing that with sand also? j

I have one of these and it works fine for occasional use. My guess on the vertical/horizontal question is that some bottle jacks will not operate horizontally and the multi position unit has the jack that will work in either position.

I have used a lot of different bottle jacks over the past thirty years. The range from 1 ton to 100 tons. When someone sees me using a jack in the horizontal position, they are amazed because they have never been able to do it. The trick is quite simple. Make sure that the pump section is on the bottom. It is that simple. You should be able to get at least 75% of the stroke and a properly designed jack will give 100%.
