11 Gal. Compressor

I have a small 11 gallon Coleman compressor that I use at my hay barn. I run it with a 4400 watt generator and no extension cord. The problem is the thermo shutdown has been activating before it comes up to pressure. The motor is hot.
I have taken the cover off to wheel it by hand and it wheels freely so there doesn't appear to be any binding or dragging.
This unit is out of warranty but has been used very little.
Any ideas out there what my problem may be.

Are you using the correct oil in the compressor? I got a free compressor with an overheating problem and the problem was the wrong oil in the compressor causing excessive load on the motor.

Bob, I would go with bigjt on the probability that it is in a dusty environment and your not getting enough air flowing through the motor causing overheating. You may also need to clean the filter on the compressor intake because if it is dirty it will make the compressor work harder to bring it up to pressure.

Had exactly the same problem in reply to BobMo, 07-16-2005 05:26:36
Bought an 11 gallon Coleman years ago when was in Illinois and selling the house, to work around the house. Problem was the guage of the wire of the 100' extension cord was using. I tought was because was extremely hot out when was air gunning shingles and burnt it up. Nope, not enough current through the small guage wires, working the motor to death. Either go straight to the source, or make yourself one very good, but expensive extension cord and the problem will be solved.

Oh yeah, one more thing in reply to Mark - IN., 07-16-2005 09:15:30
Throw that extension cord away. Like mine, is probably toast, even though you can't see it through the sheath. You can't trust it anymore, is probably toast.

Don't know what the horsepower or amp draw is for the compressor. would guess at the most it is 2 hp. That is the biggest you can get to run on 110. 4400 should run this but would check the output voltage as suggested as you may be pushing it. 4400 on the generator is probably surge or starting wattage.

The suggestion I would make. You say it is in a hay barn. Sounds like a dusty enviroment. When you get some pressure put a blow gun on the hose and give the motor a good cleaning. I am talking about the inside through the air vents.

Power ratings on portable generators are very optimistic. Probably the only ratings exaggerated more are the horsepower ratings on small air compressors. Probably your generator isn't up to the task. Note that the 4400 "watt" rating of your generator is really a 4400 volt-amp rating, and they aren't the same thing.

Monitor the output voltage of your generator while your compressor is running. If it drops below 110 volts, you need a bigger generator.
