My 235/140 ac/dc machine quit on dc , but ac works fine still. DC has some voltage, but sticks and won"t produce arc with 3/32 even at 140a. Any likely culprits before I dive in?

Absolutely, as stated, check the diodes. Most likely problem. I have fixed one or two DC welding machines is this is a common problem when one acts up.

Thanks guys, a good place to start. Any clue to what size the diode bridge usually is? I dont want to mistake it for transformer or something else.

My suggestion would be the diode bridge. It is just a educated guess. Open the box up (could probably stand to be cleaned out in there anyway) find the diode bridge. It will probably have a bunce of fins to disapate heat. will need to unhook the wires and then check with a ohm meter. Each diode will show continuity one way and not the other. If any either show continuity both ways or don't show it either they are bad.

Maybe T-bone will weigh in. He is the most knowledgeable at least on welding that i have seen on the site.
