Ignition sysem question

Ever wonder what Engineering students do with spare time? My housmates and I are trying to build a potato gun out of a piece of steel conduit pipe (big stuff), and want to use a battery-coil ignition off an old car or something. Few questions have come up. 1) can we ground the gun to the batttery and not risk sending too much juice back to the battery? I know it's done in vehicles, but there's a lot more metal to go through to get back. 2) is it possible to get a shock from the gun while holding it, like when you grab a spark plug? If anyone has suggestions, or even a clue as to what I'm talking about, I'd appreciate the input. we aren't electrical engineers, so we don't know this stuff!

Hi HIK, You need to study some more engineering before messing with explosives or explosive gases. I can tell by the way you asked for info in your post!

I would suggest you start with air and compressed air as it's more forgiving of mistakes and will only blow your body part off and not wipe out the neighborhood. As your education and abilitys expand then consider something else.

I have included some websites to mull over.

This type of experminting usally one allows for one mistake, your last mistake of your life.

Keep in mind that where your heading is nothing more than a "homemade" firearm, and although you read it on the internet it WILL not be safe. Common sense has to be used.

Some of the below websites have good links to your interest.

The local law got real serious about some near-by experimenters making a big BANG and a projectile. Used words like "homemade bomb" and "jail time." Don't think it ended in a conviction but lots of inconvience with the legal system.

Don't like to spoil your party, but could I give you a little bit of advice? Stay away from making anything that is potentially explosive, expecially things that power any type of projectiles. I can visualize all sorts of hands or fingers blown off, or worse yet, perhaps a serious eye injury or even blindness. I know it's all in fun, but my neighbours 15-year lost a thumb a few years ago while inventing some sort of silly thingamabob, not too much different than what you guys are doing. Maybe just go down to the local watering hole and have a few cool ones instead. Just my 2 cents ...

NOT THAT I SPEAK FROM ANY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE MIND YOU - - - But... stick to 3 or 4' of 2" PVC with an adapter to about 18" of 6" PVC and a screw cap on the big end for clean-out. A 3/32" hole will fit a butane lighter refil can just right. Rather than fuss with all that complicated homemade electronic ignition, why not just fit it with a BBQ igniter? You can buy the whole outfit at most larger hardware stores and then you won't need a battery. Nice push-button trigger too.

If my imagination serves me correctly, you might want to bevel the end of the barrel edge so its tapered back and away from the open end. This allows the end of the barrel to cut the spud to fit the barrel. Measure a ramrod (broom stick) to set the projectile just in front of the chamber (big end). Don't load too much butane in the chamber or it won't light right.

I seem to have calculated that such a device might launch a spud better than 125 yards or more.

NOT THAT I'VE EVER TRIED SUCH A THING.

A little word about the glue together potato guns. Last one that was made here was glued together and dry fired at me. Nobody expected the results of that. The glue vapors fired. I was looking at it and saw green and pink fire roar out of the barrel and my ears rang forever. See how easy it is to make a little mistake with a dangerous toy and grown men? JUST BE CAREFUL! The White Rain hair spray worked the best for us @ $1 a can at one of the cheap stores. L8R----Fred OH

This is exactly how we make ours and they work fine. We remove the 4" cap, put 1 shot of ether in it, the away she goes. Too much ether? She simply will not ignite or ignites very slowly.
We use to use Charcoal lighter but they have it watered down way too much now days. I have to admit, we have the neighbor trained to hide when we break out our cannons He lives about 150 yards over and we put them in his yard left and right.

If smoking the coil is the concern, put a ballist resistor in series with the coil. Usually mounted on the firewall of older cars, very cheap at junk yards, may be free. My neighbor somehow used a spark wheel out of of BIC lighter to set his off, so think of different sources for ignition, thats what your parents sent you to school for, to think!
