MTD rear-tine rototiller, 5 hp BS leaking gas

My new-used tiller started stalling yesterday. It restarted easily with the choke but wouldn't run long. Then I noticed fuel leaking from the carburetor onto the tank to which it is attached. I tried tightening the screws but it still stalled. Needle adjustments had no effect.

It's a fairly early-model motor and I have never had a carb like that apart.

Any suggestions?

I've built these engines for a long time, an we can get between 47 to 50 hp. out of a 5 hp. Briggs. So i know a little about them(just a little!) Now your diaphram gasket is very easy to see an even Helen Keller could see if it was leaking. What you may wanna look at is whats called your BASE GASKET, its between the carb an the gastank. The way Briggs design the engine the tank hangs off of the carb an you get enough vibration with this design that it will in time snap your carb off at the block. Use air an blow at that area an you should see gas seeping from between the carb an the gastank. The gasket runs about 50 cents if that..... ....Rick

My personal experience with these small carbs is that its easy to work on them if you take it off use vise grips to pinch any rubber lines from the carb and take it to your work bench and take the carb apart and get a can of carb cleaner and spray all the ports out and then replace the diaphram no matter what it looks like and check also the rest of the seals if its not wonderful replace it. just my 2 cents I been dealing with smal engines since i was 7 or 8 so thats at least 10 years experience

There should be a side plate with four screws holding it on the side of the carb. Its part of the diaghram. Sounds Like the plate is loose or the diaghram is ripped or has a hole in it. Easy to fix, just watch for the spring and retainer that will fall out (remove plate slowly). Kits available at Farm and Fleet for Briggs.
