Hypothetically speaking, would the electrical wire from a clothes dryer work as a made-up harness on an old tractor and would it matter if it was 6 or 12 volt. Please excuse my ignorance on this topic. Dan

The dryer's internal wiring insulation is intended for dry and non oily applicatiions. Don't park your tractor near anything you don't want burned. Some wiring is 27 ? strand rather than 7 strand used for regular service wiring which is it's only positive feature. The 10 gauge supply cord being plastic rather than cloth fabrice is little better. That plastic is also intended for no sunlight, no oil/oil fumes/vapour, no water, temperatures of probably less than 140F or so and very little flexing. Abrasion resistance is poor as well. So unless this wire is a tempory fix for 10 minutes to get a machine limped into the shop. Don't even think about it.

And I thought I was cheap!

Most of the control wiring in a clothes dryer is going to be fairly small gauge, probably 18 awg or so. And the pieces may be too short to use anyway.

Buy a spool of 14 gauge wire at an auto parts store. You'll also need a few feet of heavier stuff (10 gauge) for the charging circuit. Although the wire won't be color coded, you can mark the wires using colored electrical tape.

Dryer and washer wire is "machine tool wire" and it's stranded. The gauge and circuit number may be printed on it. It comes in many colors, but the longest you will usually find is about 3 feet. I think it's rated about 80*c. The clear cover tends to split and get raggedy in time due to sun and heat. Use automotive wire unless it's an emergency.

No, not if you are talking about solid copper household wire. You need stranded wire to deal with the vibration. 12 ga. wire should be good for 25 A, overkill for everything except the battery cables.

Even the stranded type wire used for running in conduit in residential & commercial wiring is not good for tractors or autos . Go buy the stranded wire used on automobiles . It's more flexible which you need to handle vibrations & movement . Also get a small tube of dielectric grease for all connection to save you moisture problems down the road . It's surprising how moisture will cause problems later on . Experience has taught me alot .

Yes it could be used on 6 or 12 volt as long as the size of the wire is correct. I doubt that the wire in the dryer will be long enough and the right size or gauge for your tractor. As a general rule the wire for 6 volts will require the larger physical size than 12 volts. Is the wire stranded?
