Craftsman Drill Driver Problem

Just thought some of you might be interested in my Craftsman "Professional 1/2" Cordless 18v Drill/Driver" story.

Bought new about 2 years ago. Used a total of about 2 shifts (equivalent to 16 hours of intermittent use). Never mistreated and looks factory new.

Driving 3" deck screws into pilot-holed wood on Sunday. Clutch suddenly and totally stripped-won't turn anything, even on direct drive.

I have tried all day today to talk to someone (or even get an automated response) at Sears. Almost two hours on the phone. Want to find out if it is repairable (at my cost, since the warranty is only one year) and where to send or take it. Absolutely NO way to talk to a human there who speaks enough english to understand the request. Been put on hold etc, etc. Phone in tool department rang over 30 times before I gave up.

Does anyone know if this (over $230 cost) tool is repairable? How to get repairs at Sears? Or is my brother correct: it is a throwaway?

Anyone considering a Craftsman power tool might consider this experience.

P.S. I do not work for Sears. Just a dissatisfied former customer.

I work with a guy that got an 18v. "Crapsman" cordless for Xmas. 4yrs. ago, it lasted a week and a half and just quit. He took it back to Sears and got jacked around, finally they sent it in to fix it. After 2 months he called and they said they lost it, and to go to the nearest Sears with a number they gave him and get a new one. That one lasted 3 months and same thing. He threw that one in the trash and bought a DeWalt 18v that was over 3yrs ago, the DeWalt is still going strong. By the way a month after he got the DeWalt the first Craftsman drill was dropped off at his house by UPS and he put that one in file 13 too.

Thanks for all the helpful replies, both on-line and private mail. Vern's suggestion to check the gear selector was the key. I really thought I had moved it after the malfunction, but obviously hadn't. Works fine now. Also, I can't get the drill to NOT be engaged. Got to explore this in more detail.

All other suggestions and comments were really appreciated. For info; yes, I am almost anal about keeping manuals & paperwork. In this case, there is no parts breakdown, just a page showing accesories to purchase. I tried the internet, but couldn't get to anything likre the parts breakdown micheal suggested. I'll look again.

Thanks again guys,

JerryB

Use the internet!!!!! very awesome parts website. www.sears.com go to parts from mainpage. have your model number from the tag on the tool handy and you should be able to find anything you need shipped right to your door.

I have used it a bit already this winter. very handy. I personaly like craftsman tools. If ya don't like the craftsman brand you can always spend the money to by the namebrand and still end up with junk for a lot higher price.

my .02 worth.

Did the tool come with a manual that included a parts list? If so, did you keep it? Your best chance of getting it fixed is to do it yourself, if you have access to a parts list with parts numbers.

Your experience, and the general quality (or more accurately, lack thereof) is why there is only one Crapsman power tool left in my inventory. It is a router from the 60's that has had the shaft bearings replaced about 4 years ago, and is still going strong. The "modern" Sears powertools are over-priced, under-engineered junk, IMHO.

Jerry;
I have one of those drills and I thought the same thing had happened but the two speed switch on top had slipped out of gear. I shifted it back and it has been working fine since. Hope your problem is as easy to fix. By the way, the drill is made by RYOBI if that is any help.

I had a 14.4 drill from sears. Strip out on me too, but I got lucky it happen the 11th month. Took it back, but the model I bought was a Christmas special. No longer available. They said they would upgrade but I had to pay the difference, ask for my money back and bought a Dewalt. As far as repair, our sears here has a repair department, if that doesnt help, you might try repairing yourself,or at least, take it apart and see the damage.
