Mig weld question

My company wants to speed up some TIG welding on high voltage buss by making the root pass with a MIG welder.Which way do you make the pass if you are a righty:drag away from your left hand or feed toward the left hand.I didnt tell them Ive only used wire feed twice in twenty years.Im also hoping to use the same gas bottle of argon as the TIG uses and am pretty sure thats ok but if not please let me know.Base material is 5" round Al. pipe[6061] with a sleeve inside.1/4 wall thickness.If I have to specify the MIG welder what machine should I ask for.{I will bring it up in a man lift].Thanks for the help.

Hi DS,

First question I would ask does the WPS (welding procedure specifiction) allow the use of Mig? If not then you will need to consult the Welding Engineer for there approval.

I always use a left to right travel as then I can see the total molten puddle as I have a left dominate eye.

Although 100%Ar can be used, 75%Ar25%He adds more arc stability with deeper pentaration which is desirable for AL welding at about 40cft/hr.

Although Mig short arc will work well for 1/4" AL, Mig spray arc is that much better as the molten transfer and arc stability is smoother.

Mig-SA then you want a spool gun with a CV machine with a 60% duty cycle at 250a. For high work the ideal machine is one that has voltage and slope controls on the spool gun. With the newer machines I would bet that slope control is no longer needed.

Without using any of the newer machines, it's hard for me to say what brand but 20yrs ago my choice would be Miller then Lincoln. In any event stay away from the cheap machines while welding AL. Welding Fe is alot more forgiving than welding Al.

You can speed up your Tig (wet torch) welding with using a different techinque. Use a #10 short cup and rocking in your weld. Rocking the weld is where you establish the arc then place your cup lip on the V grove edge and rock the cup in side to side while at the same time twisting (turning) the torch just slightly at a angle to move the cup forward. The Filler rod is layed into the V and not moved. With the correct heat setting and filler rod diameter and rocking motion, As the torch is moves forward (rocked) it burns off just the correct amount of filler thus filling the V.

Besure and ball your 100% tungsten using a piece of copper. Sharpen the tungsten to a sharp point then using DCEN on a copper bar thus forming a ball on the tip.

As with any AL welding I can't stress enough keeping the weld joint VERY clean with a "new" powered SS wire wheel.

Thanks T-Bone I have printed out your advice for my files.I know about the round tip for al.The 100% is marked with red?and 2% thoriated is green?

I would be wary of speeding up the process by using the mig for the root pass. The reason the tig process is used for a root pass is it is the best and cleanest weld possible if applied correctly. If a tig root pass is called for there is a reason for it and short-cutting could cause somebody some major grief. Aluminum welding is much more difficult and tricky than steel you could very easily turn this job into a mess if not familiar with the particulars of welding aluminum. I dont want to get preachy here but it sounds as if this job should be done by an experieced welder , if not a certified one. Chuck Davis

Thank you I am a weldor and will take a certification test for each job.It is a visual test only.I have passed these tests in the past.The power company is not going to let any bonehead start welding on their 230kv buss without testing.On friday I told a supervisor I was not interested in using the MIG.I am now operating a crane and raising steel towers.I will save my eyesite for hobby uses as long as I can stay employed without welding.This was just a rumor as to what some other weldors were doing at a different switchyard.They complain all the weldors are primadonnas,so I passed on the entire job.Thanks again for your concern your power will not be interupted due to my welding.

Well dr.sportster i know well about the primadonna syndrome as i was called that and worse at times in my 30 years of burning rod. As i am retired out of the Steel industry things have changed drastically and everyone is "multicraft" and with that comes my concern that a bonehead could possibly due said job.Six weeks of training you can weld,Six weeks of training you are an electrician and so on. No disrespect intended, just hate to see shortcutting,been there done that. Chuck Davis
