OT: car trouble, need possible causes

I have a 2002 Saturn SL1 and tonite I was on a major Mi. road and the car stalled at a red light and would not restart, my wife and son were in the car with me. I parked the car and all 3 of us ran across the street to call my inlaws who are 3 miles from the incident and my Mother-in-law picked us up and I got the car towed to a Saturn dealer 1 mile away, well to make this story shorter after we drove my mother inlaw home. I went back to the car 1/2hour later and the car started, weird, I left the car at the dealer and we drove my mother inlaws truck home. What are the possible causes of this? 1. I thought at first it was the timing belt but it restarted so that is not it. 2. it was 90degrees outside, too hot for the electronic ignition? dont know. 3. Coolant level was good. 4. car had gas, with 3/4 of a tank. 5. Bad gas? 6. vapor lock? This doesnt happen much anymore from what I know, the car was only running 5 minutes anyway. 7. I gave the car an oil change yesterday and drove it 60 miles or so, is there an oil pressure switch that would shut off the car if it fell below 5-10 PSI? I am going to have the dealer look at it since it is there anyway. The car has 58,000 miles on it.

I got a call from the dealer at 4:30 today. The intake manifold gasket has to be replaced, and that is the fault code which points to the gasket, and they are going to change the trans fluid and filter and clear the codes and get the idle to run right, it has ran high for a while now, $600 OUCH. I pick it up tomorrow. I guess I cant complain I have only spent money on oil changes that I do myself, a set of tires and one tune up for 3.5 years of driving it. It will need a brake job soon too, but I wont let the dealer do that. Thanks for the responses.

Did it run normally? My Saturn will idle erratically and occaisionally die when the EGR valve needs replacing. It restarts, but not easily. The check engine light should be on if this is the case.

193,000 miles on a 1995 SL2, yes it uses 1 qt. every 750 - 1,000 miles, I check it every time I add gas, just like all my other machines.

Idle problem may be caused by a bad throttle position sensor.

My daughter bought a new saturn 4 dr in 2000. the motor locked down in it right in the middle of traffic in Macon, Ga. with 28000 miles showing thusleaving her and a 3 mo. old child stranded in July traffic. She called the Dealership. Saturn of Macon. They took 2 hrs to send a tow truck, and when they repaired engine, they put in a new long block, told her that saturn would not cover any part of the cost, since it ran out of oil. She bought the car new,and they serviced it at dealership. Saturn said 1 qt oil consumed every 1500 miles was acceptable. Engine holds 4 qts of oil. They also reccomended to her at the dealership to let THEM change oil at 7500 mile intervals as per factory specs. Figure on this one!! 1 qt. oil per 1500 miles,--4 qts oil will go 7000 miles and there is none left over for the other 500 miles. I know that you need to check oil regularly, but this is uncalled for. It used more oil between changes than it held. She got it from the shop and ran it till the last little bit of factory warranty went out, still pouring oil through it, and found a Honda to trade it for. Don't think nobody will fool a Saturn off on her again!!

It turned out to be a faulty crankshaft position sensor. Did the car throw any codes?

This may sound odd but, my niece's Saturn did the same thing (die at a light, then not starting for awhile). Did this three or four times. Her neighbor is a GM mechanic and he replaced the gas cap - hasn't done it since. May not be the problem, but it's a fitting story.

The gas cap may actually be it, Galen. Some of the newcars are so sensitive, even to the number of "clicks" when you put the cap on. It should be in the owner's handbook. When my son's car did this, it was because a couple of teeth had sheared off the timing belt.
